Hi, I downloaded this piece of software (XP LogMod 2) that was supposed to allow me to change my windows xp log on screen, but there's a slight problem. I didn't have my own logonui.exe. so to try it out I searched in windows for one, chose one at random and pressed ok. Then I pressed the "windows" key + L to see if it had worked, and my desktop background came up, but nothing else happened so I restarted.

After restarting, the windows xp home loading icon went through as normal, and the mouse pointer appeared on a black screen (as usual), but then nothing. The log on screen won't appear, and whatever I do or press it won't change, and so I have to keep restarting manually. To try and combat this, I fresh installed windows xp on a partition i have, but I have no idea what files to change to get the other installation working from within the new installation. I've tried replacing the logonui.exe file with a fresh one, but that hasn't worked. I tried using the windows xp cd to 'repair' it, but I can't remember my administrator password. I tried using the hkey_local_machine, but I can't access the other windows xp installation from the one I am currently on. I tried reverting back to the original with 'XP LogMod 2', but that only works with the OS you are on, not another. Do you know what I can do to get this to work, by changing files within a different installation of windows? Thanks for any suggestions.

remember that admin password, boot into safe mode and remove the program through the add/remove programs control panel.. that will generally put everything back to what it previously was, if not then your pretty much looking at a full reformat. if i remember right, there should be a way to bypass the passwd lock so that you can do this... probably something i read on a XP News site

You can use O+O BlueCon to get the admin password.
Other than that, quit screwing with stuff you don't know how to fix.
    Cheers.

There are a handful of Linux Boot Discs that you can use to unlock and/or reset the Admin password (use the * key to blank it out). You could try a blank password (that is the default password) if you don't recall setting a password. I don't have a link for the disc--It's been almost a year since I last searched for it! But you should be able to find it with a Google search that includes words like Linux NT Password Reset Boot Disc to narrow the field down. The last time I didi it, I had to d/l a floppy image and a seperate utility to write that image to the floppy--the utility and doc's were on the same site though.

    Good Luck!

If it ain't broke don't try to fix it! But, hell if you can tweak that bastard just a little bit more....hehehe.

Found a site that has all the goods on the Linux BootFlop. It also has an image for a bootable CD as well.

    http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/

Goto the "How do I get it?" section and click the link for downloading the image. You'll get a nice howto page. Scroll down to the downloads section. If you want the floppy, you'll have to get the image and the floppy creating utility. The CD should be a bootable ISO that you just burn to CD-R. I used the Floppy method and it worked on the W2KPro Laptop from work--it should work on XP as well.

    Good Luck!

I tried resetting it using a password reset program, but I found my admin password was already blank, so I tried to change it to a word, but it won't let me, because it's blank. So I simply pressed 'enter' when the win xp repair function came up, but it says the password I've entered 'is not valid'. What do I do? Will another password reset program let me change it from blank to something? Thanks for any suggestions.

No, it ain't cheap, but it's available other ways, too. I've used it many times when people screw up and want miracles.
OO Defrag isn't half bad, either.

Did you try the Linux Boot Disc? I used it on an XP system and it blanked the password just fine.

Make sure you follow the prompts and hit the right responses. Usually, you just keep hitting enter until you get to the prompt to select the user account to edit. If the admin was locked out, you may have to unlock it and save the new SAM, then reboot the floppy again to blank it out.

Leaving the new password entry as a blank entry doesn't blank it out and leaves it unchanged--you have to use the * (asterisk) to blank it out. Hit ! (exclamation) to get out of the password reset routine and then you have to write the new SAM to the hive. Verify you want to write to the new hive, and hit "q" to exit the utility. Reboot normally and use "Administrator" as the user and just hit enter with a blank password and you should get in.

It's all explained in the how-to at the link I gave earlier. I think a read-me file gets put on the floppy as well.
