I think you are getting confused, starbucks doesn't have free internet for customers, it costs $10 a month (i think) and it is called hotspot wireless.

But you can pick up someone else's connection but I'm pretty sure it's illegal. In fact the only time I heard it was legal was just for a competition at DefCon
