Very simply....1790 disk error means CMOS does not match the drive that you have installed. Which would make sense if you said you replaced the drive. First step, you have to clear the CMOS. There is a jumper on the motherboard that you need to short in order to clear the CMOS. After that, let the machine auto-detect everything and just save all of the auto-detected changes...then, it should work normally. By the way, you don't need the "special" partition so don't waste your time with that. I have rebuilt many a compaq and I just Fdisk the drive and wipe out that partition.
