adding users linux

does anyone know how i can add a user without useradd ?

i'm on a box without this script so i can't do it.

i've tryed to add the user into /etc/passwd and /etc/group without avail.
the box uses shadow passwords, so i put "x" as password, but when i try to (as root) run

Code:

passwd user

i receive "authenitication tokens could not be updated" or simmilar.

if anyone could help i would much appreciate it.

no worries solved my problem already. i ran passwd [user] again and for some reason it replaced the "x" with a hashed password. (no idea)

stupid computers.
