I found a PSP 1001 in my garage and it has system version 4.05 on it. Obviously its been sitting there for a long time, but I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction to where I could find out how to hack it, and install homebrewed games, such as doom.

IIRC you can just update the PSP to 6.35 OFW then download the signed HEN that was released just recently and off you go !

    What? No way.
Update it to a firmware version that has got a HEN supporting it (E.g. 5.03, 6.20 or 6.35).

Then install 5.50 GEN-D3 final on it after launching the HEN on one of those firmwares.
5.50 GEN-D3 final is a real CFW that's stored in the PSP's NAND chip, so you can switch off the PSP and not loose the ability to launch homebrew software.

Go with SP193s advice. Homebrew compatibility isn't as good on 6.35 (yet).

Don't forget to pandorise your battery first in case it goes wrong (it shouldn't though).
