so i'm new to this, trying to boot into ulaunchelf using this guide and a fat ps2.

    http://freemcboot.info/swap.php

I am attempting this with MGS3.

so i made an image of my mgs3 disk with imgburn, then renamed BOOT.ELF to NETDOWN.ELF. then i opened the .iso i made with Apache, and changed the TOC to 915196 then replaced the old NETDOWN.ELF with the renamed BOOT.ELF i downloaded from the guide. burnt that disk.

loaded up my original copy of MGS3 and got to the start screen. Of course me being the newbie i didn't know what "swap" meant so i was taking my game out normally until a friend said i needed to make a slide card and pop the cover off my tray. I made one out of a hard piece of plastic and practiced using it on an empty machine til i could do it perfectly.

BUT here's where i run into trouble- it says I need to swap disks after I press Start on the MGS3 main screen, but whenever i do the slide card trick with the disk in, it screws up the disk because its still spinning. how do i get the disk to stop spinning so i can swap at the main menu?

    thanks

Thats the problem with this swapping method. The disc won't stop spinning. Unless you use Swap Magic or Cogswap there is no way that the disc will stop.

    seriously

then why would it even be listed as an install method

that's ridiculous, if someone has swapmagic already there's no point in using this

This method is meant to use it at best one time for the install after that you can use homebrew-software to do many things.

    ...and if not?
If someone has nothing to choose from?

No swap-disc, no friend with a PS2, no mod-chip, no cheat-device, no volunteer, no exploit, "no nothing"?
For example those which import a console with another MG-Region.

Itīs a way for those who already have those games, or want a cheap swap-disc.
Those who have one of those games, donīt need anything to buy (except a blank DVD).

Did you read my answer ? It's a hot swap this means changing the Disc while it's still spinning !

I did. It was an answer to the question, Iīve quoted from you,...

how do i get the disk to stop spinning
...but you didnīt read the first reply in this thread from Northbear, in which he already said...

The disc only will stop, after uLE or an other homebrew-programm is started, which can and will stop the disc (which obviously is after you swapped the discs...).
It isnīt mentioned in the tutorial, so it might be worth a "line"/sentence, for those who do not know...

    Edit: Northbear was faster.

The easiest way is to open the case and remove the drives cover.
