I got 1.1beta a while ago, ONLY for launching hdloader off of MC on old "dead" laser systems... Just recently messed with it. Works great, but a few questions. I assumed I had to replace the osd-boot-free.elf with my hdloader.elf and name it the same...I did, it works. My questions are: what it the runme.elf in there for? If I ONLY want to boot hdloader without disk, did I do it right? Is there any other way to do what I want and free up more space to have to use on the MC or is it always going to use ~ 2mb no matter what? Thanks for any experienced replies!

Easiest thing you can do is install 1.5 (usb drivers embedded) or 1.4b (no config file) if you ONLY want to use hdloader.

To use the less space possible, you may need to read this and follow the instructions (thank l_oliveira) to use a 75 kb file for the launcher.

Thanks for the reply. I read what was suggested, didn't seem relevant... What are the two seperate elf's in version 1.1beta for? (runme.elf and osd-boot-free.elf)

runme.elf is the elf that is booted in that version of fmcb (which takes 1.3 mB if you have a phat ps2 and I think is incompatible with slims).

But the free mcboot "exploit" needs some fixes in order to correctly run homebrew, so you should change the runme.elf to ffgriver's runme.elf 1.1c (don't exacltly remeber the version), which applies the fixes and runs boot.elf at mc0:/boot

Believe me, it's far easier to use a newer fmcb version, in terms of use and installing.

Yes, all my units are phat ones. I tried changing to the newer runme.elf, but only got red screen. I have one unit that is chipped, and I can just throw in a cdr with the mcflasher on it, and it flashes my mc so that it boots ule. Then I replace osd-boot-free.elf with a hdloader elf named the same from my usb to the mc (but the runme.elf is still there). Then my mc boots to hdloader, which is the only thing I want. With a newer version I could just take its main installer elf and run it from a usb if I flash my mc again to boot to ule? Then it will have actual /boot/ paths this time where you can replace the elfs with whatever? Should I just stick with what I allready have working (5.7 mb available on mc after all is said and done), or will using a newer version allow me to save some space on my mc?

If hdloader is working without ANY issues, you can delete runme.elf.

The point is that osd-boot-free.elf runs runme.elf, which applies the patches required to get most homebrew working and the disc drive, then it boots BOOT/BOOT.ELF.

You said you hace different ps2 (of same region), so I guess you plan to use the same mc for all them, and that's why you want to use 1.1beta.

1.5 version has the multi-version install feature, which is the very same. I think the best option to save space if you are using a pendrive to hold hdloader is install this version, then delete all it installs from your mc except B?EXEC-SYSTEM folder.

Then put hdloader in your pendrive as RESCUE.ELF in the root of the usb stick. FMCB will always run that elf first of all, so you don't need to bother with any more mc files. Of course you can have ulaunchelf as rescue.elf, then run hdloader from it.

Thanks for the info. I'll give V1.5 a try sometime soon and see how it works(or not) for me! So V1.5 will put the files in the appropriate (and capitalized) folders unlike my old version? Is that beneficial?

I installed multiversion of 1.5 and had hdloader as my only boot. It launches hdloader seeminly fine, but when I choose a game to play, it doesn't launch , just a b.s.o.d.

No offense intended, but if you insist on using an obsolete version of FMCB, then very few of us can even attempt to help you, as we don't get the results you do. There can't really be much active support for old versions, since that could hold back future developments.

What you should do is to upgrade to the current version of FMCB (v1.6), so that you get the advantages of the many improvements made (including the elimination of 'runme.elf'). Of course you don't have to use all the new features if you're only interested in running HDLoader, though I think you're missing many nice things that way, such as practical methods for gamesave maintenance etc, but that's a choice you're free to make.

But choosing to stick with an obsolete version and yet expect full support for it, that is not a realistic option, as the guys who created this stuff want to move forward without being held back by servicing abandoned branches of the project.

    Best regards: dlanor
