It is strange that the PS2 needs an emulator to run PS1 games,
Sounds crazy, I know...
doesn't the PS2 have a PS1 hardware chip on-board?
Yes, it has... But...
1. The PS2 has a few processors,... Beside the GPU and the SPU and some other stuff like the Vector-Units in the Main-CPU/EE, there are
-the main-CPU/EmotionEngine and
-the Co-Processor/IOP
The IOP is used in PS2-Mode to run the different Hardware-Drivers and manage IO from those devices/connections...
In PS1-Mode, the IOP 'switches' to be the Main-Processor... And then there couldn't run any driver-stuff on it, which grants access to other devices then CDs, since it is now the Main-CPU (in PS1-Mode, it is and works and responds tothe PS1-Software running, exactly like the PS1-CPU would) and allready very similar to a PS1-CPU.
If I wanted to play my PS1 backups without disk swapping would installing a mod chip be a better route to go?
It would be the only way from burned CD, if you don't want to swap...
About modchips:
If you really want to add PS1-Support, but don't need any other additional Modchip-Features, then I'd sugest you to use a PIC as PS1-Chip, or PS2-Chip for PS1-Games and 'unlocking the drive'.
Glad to be of service,...
