I've got this PSTwo v.15 77004 PAL (no modchip)i want to run Freemcboot and ESR on.

My plan was to use swapmagic to install. I got the retail 3.6.
I've been following "the http://bootleg.sksapps.com/tutorials/fmcb/en_swapmagic.htm" totorial but no luck!

With the usb-stick inserted swapmagic freezes at the splashscreen and nothing happends

Seems like swapmagic fail to read the usb-stick or to start launchelf at least.
Tried 3 brands of sticks up to now: Cruizer, datatraveller and a PNY-something!!!

Did i missed out of something here? Is it possible do this with a v.15 PAL unit or?

I'm a newbie at ps2homebrews but usually not stupid! maybe a firsttime here! ;-)

    Help anyone?

Did you tried this solution http://psx-scene.com/forums/freevast...-freezing.html
If Swapmagic freezes again, then your USB is not compatible with this program.
Bootlegninja said in other thread that Lexar USB devices are extremely compatible brand and I have success with Sony USM1GJ.

I agree with you, but if you have only a Swapmagic disk without magic keys or slide card then you can't launch uLE CD or DVD.
I think it's working for you because uLE have different USB drivers.

    Thanks alot guys!

So I guess it's a matter of doing things right!

krika69, thanks for your replay but there I noticed a difference from the tutorial I'm using. Should the renamed uLE.elf in the SWAPMAGIC folder be renamed SMBOOT0.ELF or SWAPMAGIC.ELF???

I've done a short tutorial myself just to know what I'm doing. Do you see any obvious errors?

    /j

    1. Format USB stick FAT32 (Lexar,Sony USM1GJ???)

    2.Download: uLE v4.23, ESR beta r9a.rar ,FREE_MCBOOT_1.6, SMS Version 2.8 (Rev.5).elf, HDL_V0.8C.ELF

    3. Create Directory x:\SWAPMAGIC . X:\ = USB-stick!

    4. Extract "BOOT.ELF" from the uLE archive to the X:\SWAPMAGIC folder. and rename it to (case sensitive) SWAPMAGIC.ELF (or SMBOOT0.ELF???)

    5. Extract the FREE_MCBOOT.ELF and INSTALL folder to the root of your USB Stick from the FMCB Installer Archive.

    6. Copy BOOT.ELF (uLE), ESR.ELF (ESR beta r9a mcard.elf?) , HDLOADER.ELF (HDL_V0.8C.ELF), SMS.ELF (SMS Version 2.8 (Rev.5).elf), FMCB_CFG.ELF to X:\INSTALL

    7. Insert USB and SwapMagic CD in PS2 and start it.

    8. uLaunchELF starts.

    9. Enter uLE's 'File Browser' and navigate to mass:/ then launch FREE_MCBOOT.ELF

    10. Run the FreeMcBoot Installer.

Finished!!! Remove Swapmagic CD and USB-stick and restart!

    Right?

Yes, you are doing everythink perfect.
Before restarting the console you can configure your FREEMCB.CNF by pressing "O" when see the Free MCBoot installed successfully.
About SWAPMAGIC.ELF or SMBOOT0.ELF it's the same, with one difference SWAPMAGIC.ELF starts automatically and SMBOOT0.ELF starts with pressing UP+L1.

No he don't/will not, if he do it this way.

He wouldn't even able to start the configurator, if "FMCB_CFG.ELF" is in the "INSTALL"-Folder directly,...

It should be placed in the given Folder, which is for config-things,...

That is true, of course. But the way he described it, that will be the case too.

He clearly stated that he unpacked the FREE_MCBOOT.ELF file and the INSTALL folder from the FMCB release package into the USB root. He then copied several elf files into the INSTALL folder (including FMCB_CFG.ELF), and does not mention removing any of its original contents.

Of course the extra FMCB_CFG.ELF file he copied into INSTALL will be ignored, just like you say, but as long as the original one in the INSTALL/FMCB_CFG/ folder is still intact, that one will still be installed correctly.

So the only error I can see is that he wasted time and space on one needless elf copy.

    Best regards: dlanor

    ^^

    Agreed.

@hambergj: Just make sure, the FMCB_CFG.ELF is in the right folder.

And for the stuff already installed to the MC, this means that FMCB_CFG.ELF should be found inside "mc0:/SYS-CONF/", since that is where the v1.6 installer puts it, and where the FMCB boot routines expect to find it (by CNF defaults).

Having done what he did, hambergj will also find a copy of the same elf file in "mc0:/BOOT/", but that copy is not the one linked to by the default FMCB CNF file, so it is not useful (and may thus be deleted).

    Best regards: dlanor
