    That would fail.
Now as always the launch of FMCB requires the use of region-specific kelf unpacking using the runtime console bios.

For all modchips using standard DEV1 methods the path should be "mc0:/BOOT/" and the filename should be "BOOT.ELF".

That is how standard DEV1 usage is defined, and how it has always been used by DMS3/DMS4 and Matrix Infinity chips, and those of their clones which also support DEV1.

Yes any console under date code 8c, and mid way threw 8c is fully compatible.

FMCB can not boot on that console.

I have an almost identical console myself (9C, so produced 3 months later) and I recommend getting hold of "SwapMagic v3.8 coder" for use in booting homebrews on your console, like I do.

Those discs have the ability to boot a file stored in a folder as "/SWAPMAGIC/SWAPMAGIC.ELF" either on an external USB drive formatted to FAT32, or stored on normal PS2 memory card. So for the first boot you need to use USB, and then you can use the homebrew you just booted to copy the same boot folder to MC, so you can boot independently from that USB drive in future.

The recommended homebrew to boot this way is uLaunchELF (aka: uLE) of version 4.42 or newer (one newer beta exists).

Booting uLaunchELF this way allows you to use most other homebrews in the same way as you would use them with FMCB. The main difference is that you must always start each reboot for homebrew with the booting of one of the SwapMagic discs, so that it can start uLaunchELF for you. But with modern homebrews you don't need to do that very often.

SMS allows you to return directly to uLE when you're done with its media playing, and if you play backup games through OPL over USB or LAN interfaces, then you can usually stop a game by IGR button combo (In-Game-Reset) and return to uLE that way, and either start a new gaming session or do something else, as you please.

In all such work that does not involve the CDVD drive, you'll have just as much freedom as with FMCB on an older console. It is only in using the CDVD drive that it gets less convenient, as you'll have to change discs from SM3coder to the backup discs (ESR backups or originals) each time, and when done with such a game you again have to change discs to get the SM3coder disc back in the tray, where you need it to reboot into homebrews again.

No. I'm afraid he was mistaken, and must have misread your datecode somehow.

9b/9B is nine months later than 8c/8C, so there is no chance of FMCB working on that console.

If you have no problem installing a chip yourself, that is one of the best solutions for that console model. You'll be trading in the 'mod-less' state of the console (matters to games with anti-mod protection) for the much improved convenience of not depending on the CDVD drive content for any homebrew use, as well as the ability to use burned backups of both PS2 and PS1 games.

do u mean to say that
Yes. Though I myself chose to use the SM3coder boot discs on my console of this model, that is mainly due to the fact that I want to keep it 'mod-less' for validity of various homebrew experiments. This would be impossible with a physical mod-chip installed.

But for general use of both homebrews and most commercial games, a real modchip is much more convenient (assuming it is a good one) than

It would be different of course if a disc-less softmod was available for this console model, but since that is not the case, a real modchip is the solution most convenient to use.

    Hi all
i'm new to all this ps2 stuff ... also i have this very unsupported model

and .. have an odd exprience installing FMCB , i have a moded slim ps2 and want to install FMCB mainly to run OPL 0.7 and lunch backups from my 500GB usb hdd ... as you all stated ... have no luck and no OSD ... except that i found that while booting my ps2 -after installing FMCB - if i hold down the triangle on my bad i boot to ule directly !! is this normal ??

that was ok for me ... so i used ule to launch OPL and go from there .

i had this strange idea of renaming OPL elf as BOOT.ELF and reboot thinking that might lead to booting it instead of ule if i hold the triangle bottom . so , i renamed it in the install folder - deleting the boot.elf belonging to ule - and then try reinstall FMCB .

here comes a very strange thing as doing this -ignoring some messages from FMCB during install - and reboot and i found the OSD menu of FMCB comes up !!!!!!!!

Yes - there was a lake of complete scrolling itemes that fmcb offers - but it was there

so is this mean anything to you guys who know what i don't ??

    plz help

    and execuse my bad english
