The most important thing to know is that the newest version of the slim PSTwo bios does not allow FMCB to work at all...
For a second hand PSTwo console this might not matter, depending on how old it is.
The problem only affects consoles with product code SCPH-90000 or higher,
and only if their datecode is "8C" or higher (third quarter 2008).
A few of the consoles with those codes do work with FMCB, but there is no way of checking this just by inspecting it from outside. The only ways are either to attempt a boot with an MC having FMCB on it, or to somehow boot uLaunchELF on the console (SwapMagic or whatever) and inspect the "MISC/Debug Info" screen in the uLE FileBrowser, to see the first four characters of the "ROMVER" file which is displayed on that screen. "0230" means that the bios version is 2.30 making FMCB impossible to use, while any lower number means an earlier bios version that allows FMCB to work fine.
All consoles with product code less than SCPH-90000 will allow FMCB to work fine, and the same should also be true of all consoles with datecode "8B" or lower (Second quarter 2008 or earlier).

I have a V16 Silver Slim console and i have installed FMCB using an older V4 console. For me it worked on all my consoles using the "normal" install option, but if you also use the normal instead of the Multiversion install option, it may or maynot work.
To be sure, its going to work, i would recommend re-installing the MultiVersion option when using different console versions, as thats its purpose.
Now if the other console is from a different region, then no it definitely wont work, so be sure its the same region as your current one when buying second hand consoles, depending on where your getting it from.
PS2 Consoles:
SCPH-30001 [V4] - unmodded (2)
SCPH-30001-R [V5] DMS4 Pro SE
SCPH-50001-N [V9] CC 2.0 SLE
SCPH-79001 [V16] Silver - unmodded

Well this likely not the version that he is likely to find new, especially if it is a silver in the US. Besides the SCPH-90000 numbering, there are also cosmetic design differences that make it easy to avoid the v18 models.
The first pic is a silver SCPH-70000 series. The kind you DO want.
The second pic is the one you do NOT. Notice how the front has less "ridges" than the previous versions.
The new versions of the black and white consoles also have the same design. Watch out for those also.
