What is the difference between Free MC Boot and ESR?
Both sound like applications that boot back up copies of games.

What is the DVDV format? Why do you have to re-burn all your backups to use with ESR?

Can I use any of my backups that I've been using for years? I've been using CSL with the swap method to boot backups for a few years, and HDL before that. I'm not new to the scene, but I haven't been to this site in a couple of months.

I'm looking for a non-swap, memory card only way of booting backups for a friend's unmodded PS2. I've got everything required to transfer files and what not, but I just need the above questions answered.

You use FMBC to boot homebrew files without a mod-chip, swap magic, or cheat disc.
ESR is a homebrew for running ONLY DVD Video patched discs. So no you can't use your existing discs.
Tutorials already exist for how to install FMBC in this forum. ESR can then be run from a USB stick, HDD, or MC depending on your preference.
I personally have a custom GUI skin for uLE with all my most used homebrew files assigned to a button.
Info on uLE and it's abilities can be found in it's sub-forum also on psx-scene.
A lot has happened while you've been away
    V3, V7, V9 PS2s FMCB 1.8/W custom FREEMCB.CNF , ULE+ICON GUI, HDL .8b childsafe, ESR, OPL beta, Misc. 3.5, & 2.5" HDDs
    PSP 1000
    PS3 60 GB BC compatible

    I Mod Fighting Sticks!!
    My PS2 Mods
    Network Games working w/HDL .8b

Free MC Boot is a method that you can run homebrew by exploiting the DVD Player Upgrade function. It installs a specially signed elf to your memory card that autoboots everytime your ps2 starts and allows you to boot homebrew. ESR is a homebrew that allows you to play backups on unmodded ps2 but the disks have to be patched to DVD Video format so that the drive doesnt reject them(like it does with unpatched backups).

No, It doesn't exploit the DVD update function. It does exploit the BROWSER update function.

As testing has been done here in the past, putting the FMCB files as if it were a DVD player update will result on FMCB requiring you to use a DVD Video disc to trigger it's bootup.
