I've burned multiple CDs, and generally know what I'm doing when it comes to this sort of thing (though this is my first time messing with the playstation).
I noticed that after multiple red screen failures (some of which people have gotten to work in this thread such as Madden 05 and Ratchet and Clank: Up your Arsenal) that it seems like I couldn't get around the playstation security check. Correct me if I am wrong, but as far as I know, the security check is near the center of the disk... and it's fairly easy to tell before something read screens, since you can see when it's checking that area. The interesting part is I have tried close to 20 games with ELF files of different types, and every time I "run" the ELF file with the original game inside it does MULTIPLE (we are talking 3-5) security checks very quickly... even the older games are doing this. Is it possible that the newer playstations are forced to do security checks on the launching of all ELF files?
If this is true, it can save a lot of time for people searching for a way to but Free MC Boot on their PS2. Also, has anyone gotten their PS2 to start up uLaunchELF after seeing the PS2 scan to the center of the disk and do a security check? If not, it seems to me an easy way to test without burning 100 dvds and just run the ELFs from the original game and watch for a security check. Or there could always be the chance I don't know what the hell I'm talking about. Let me know what you guys think.
EDIT: THAT BEING SAID I JUST MADE IT WORK.
I used Ratchet and Clank Up Your Arsenal. I replaced the NTGUI.ELF file. Start with the original game (obviously), go to multiplayer, then online (I had a profile set up already). Switch to the copy disk, and have one button on the square key, and the other right beside your CD ready to pop it out. As soon as you hit square, wait for the laser to start moving toward the center and QUICKLY pop your cd copy out, and put the regular in. It will then almost instantly start to go back to the outer ring. Quickly pop out the regular cd, and replace the copy. It will repeat the process and you will have to pop the copy, put in the regular, then pop the regular and put in the copy again. I know this seems impossible but it actually only took me 3 tries
Two anser your questions in a few short sentences.
1. Yes, it seems that a few PS2-Version do additional checks, when launching an ELF.
2. It seems, that this is not directly defined by the BIOS, but somewhat related to the game and if it calls a function.
For example,... '007 AUF' should work on every PS2.
Btw.: The trick you used and how you succeeded in installing FMCB, is called 'double-time-swap'.
