I have FMCB set up on my memory card (V1.5 still... I don't have a reliable way to boot other than that, so I don't want to update yet). It's set to boot ESR on startup (BOOT.ELF in the BOOT directory), and uLE with L2 pressed (BOOT4.ELF, I think). My problem is that whenever I boot with the Guitar Hero controller plugged in, it does not boot ESR. It just boots straight to the normal PS2 menu as if I did not have FMCB booting anything. Is there any solution to this? Thanks.

GH controllers have L2 set as the star power. and honestly, I've never been able to boot my ps2 up properly into any homebrew witht he guitar plugged in. And this includes booting any of it from the old exploit, or dev1 or dev2 from a mod chip. You need to boot up with a normal controller or normal wireless controller plugged in. once you get around to booting a guitar hero game, then you need to plug your guitar in. not before.

Guitar Hero Controllers permanetaly "push" left on the "d-pad".

So all you have to do is configure FMCB to also launch ESR when pressing left.

I myself boot ule with this method, which in turn automaticaly loads HDL. I am fully able to control (most of ) HDL and launch the GH game I want.
