SCPH-79001 seems to do some extra disc checks whenever it is trying to load .ELF files on several confirmed games. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and a couple of demo disc attempts ended in the RSOD for me. Has anyone actually done this technique successfully with Agent Under Fire on a SCPH-79001? I have double- and triple-checked all of my procedures to make sure I am doing everything in a way that has been advised in many topics on this forum.
I can see the eye of the reader doing the disc checks, but don't want to risk damaging my drive with the double-time-swap. I humbly ask for confirmation, if at all possible, before I purchase Agent Under Fire. If no one knows, I'll buy it and post my results.
Also, I'd like to thank this forum for all of the guides and literature on the topic of PS2 Homebrew that are on it. It's a very impressive collection of helpful information.
Edit: 07/08/11: Success! I was able to install Free McBoot on my PS2s memory card using the swap trick with 007: Agent Under Fire. It is not as simple as it is on older models, though. The timing seems to be much more strict. The best time to swap discs seems to be right after you select the 2nd mission (Precious Cargo). As soon as I pressed X to select that mission, I swapped discs and it went on to boot uluaunchelf after passing the control setup screen.
The first time I tried the swap here, the music didn't load and the game locked up. If that happens to you, you just need to try to do it faster. Got it the next try.
1. Play the game OR load a save file you have where the 2nd mission (Precious Cargo) is available to play.
2. Get ready to swap the discs as fast as you can manage!
3. Press 'X' to select the mission. As soon as you press X and seen the transition start to happen, swap the discs! If the music doesn't lock up, you've done it just fine.
4. Press 'X' twice more to get past the mission details screen and the control layout screen. The .ELF file should launch now. Congratulations!
I'm sorry if this was already known or if this is not the best place to put this information. I've searched everywhere and could not confirm that anyone has managed to do it on a V16 SCPH-79001 PS2. Now if anyone has the same model and is wondering, they will hopefully be able to find this post easily using the search feature of the forums. Again, sorry if someone already posted this somewhere or if it is in the wrong place.
