Please advise - non-modded PS2 slim, want to copy memory cards
Please advise - non-modded PS2 slim, want to copy memory cards –
07-30-2012,09:15 AM
I have a non-modded PS2 slim. Modding it is not an option.
I need a method, reproducible by someone else in similar circumstances, via which:
- I can copy a memory card (all or in part) to binary files on USB sticks, LAN, etc.
- transfer it back and forth via the web
- put them back onto a memory card(s) at the destination
- play the game
- re-copy to binary files on USB sticks, LAN, etc.
- repeast
What is my fastest/easiest/cheapest way to there from here?
Thanks!

If a mod isn't an option then neither is what you are asking. At least you would need free mc boot or swap magic with ulaunch to do what you ask.
PS3 CECH-25001 Rebug 4.41.2 "Lite" 1tb iNt & 2tb eXT mM 4.40.00
Back online thanks to Primee for the legit PSID!!

And that's where I'm hitting a wall, as follows:
I attempted to use the USB memory card adapter to generate a bootable mem card from a PC. Unfortunately, it appears I have the knockoff that doesn't work.
I then contacted the volunteer card maker in NJ. He does not have access to a PS2, and [redacted].
I would like to contact one of the volunteers in NV, but cannot figure out how to send a"visitor" message, only a private message, which I'm too new to do.
Further, are you saying I would need both the bootable memory card -and- ulaunch? Not a problem if so, I'm just wondering is the Free MCboot is sufficient on its own.
Thanks for your time.

you need fmcb on your memory card along with ulaunchelf. it would require no modifacation to your ps2 unless you intend to install it yourself. those two programs will be all you need for what your asking for and usually go hand in hand with each other in any normal install. fmcb is just the mod that allows you to run unsigned code such as ulaunch. ulaunch is the program used to launch .elf files and happens to have a file transfer feature like you are asking for among other useful features.
I believe if you are unwilling to do any kind of modification to your ps2 your only option is to have someone else install the programs on a memory card for you. even swap magic discs require a fliptop or sensor mod.

Thank you. It's not so much an unwillingness as it is knowing the others in my game network will be unwilling or unable to mod.
I have since contacted one of the folks in Nevada to see if they can perform the install for me.
Just to clarify - with a bootable card, I could then manipulate saved games to and from memory card and USB stick without any sort of CD?
Thanks again for your help.

Yes you will be able to transfer them to and from mc to usb, mc to mc, mc to hdd, etc.
ofcourse this is just a very small start as to what you will be able to do once you recieve your memory card.
I would note that the installer will likely be using the multi install function meaning your memory card will work on most different versions of ps2 systems, and that with some research you yourself will be able to mod multiple memory cards in the same way without any modification to the actual system.
Welcome to the scene.

FMCB is whats known as a soft mod. it does no hardware modifications and if the memory card it is installed to is removed the PS2 act as it always did.
you obviously know a little as you tried the USB adaptor install. uLE is a very good file launcher as well as being able to backup your save games. i would recomend that you use the PSU save option to the USB stick as this preserves extra information a straight copy wont. these PSU saves can then be saved or as you need emailed to someone etc... then all they need to do is have FMCB as well then use uLE to PSU paste the save back to a MC. easier to do than explain..... lol
if one of your group has swapmagic it is very simple to do a FMCB install and no modifications to the PS2 are required. once you have one install doing others is even easier.

Thank you NeverGoingBack, and Spud, for your guidance and advice.
I still haven't head back from the volunteers, and am getting a bit frustrated, but hopefully before long I'll be booting the card, making them for others, and helping a bunch of people share the workload that is right now falling on one person.
If I fail to reach a willing volunteer, would I be able to just block the sensors, boot a burned CD, and do this myself? Or is there expense involved?

if you are trying the swap method then the only expence would be if you did not have a game on the swap list to try.
i have never done the swap as i already had swapmagic.

Ah, thank you. It seems I have a card on the way, so may not need to do this. But I'll be glad you told me if it comes to that for any reason. Thanks!
