Officially confused. –
Alright, well I've tried to do some research but it's all gotten a bit convoluted, there seem to be a lot of methods.
Put simply, if I have a fat PS2, what materials and methods should I use to be able to play backed up games on a hard drive? From what I've read, my best course of action is buying a IDE HD, The World is Not Enough, a network adaptor and I already have a memory card.
What methods should I use, is this the best one in my situation? Is this "Swap Magic" or whatever it's called or something else?
Basically, trying to get Free McBoot and HDLoader running...I think.
Unless you are going to use swapmagic or another disk you might buy often then it is not worth wasting your money. It is cheaper and usually quicker to get your first FMCB install done by one of the volunteer installers. there is a thread for it and in the first post there is a list of installers. why spend $30 for a disk you use once when less than $5 will get the mem card sent and return with a guaranteed working install of FMCB..just my opinion... and then there will be no confusion.
136 installs , last on 16-NOV-2013

If you want to do it yourself, then the method you described is not how I would do it. I did not want to take my ps2 apart or force my tray open and all that hassle. You would have to buy the game, swap magic and make a card for opening your dvd drive. If you go the AR MAX route, you just need a PS1 disc and the AR MAX with a usb Flashdrive. I bought the kit that included a 32mb drive. It worked after a bit of trial and error.
If you want to go this route goto http://freemcboot.info and follow the AR MAX - PS1 Exploit tutorial. But again, if that is confusing, send your card to someone to get it done.
I have been doing a lot of experiments with FMCB and custom config and app/modules and it is pretty cool what can be done. I have even started writing an OSX app that can create and edit the config file to make it a little more intuitive.
Thanks to the good people here, you can pretty much get any question answered in detail, which is quite awesome.
