All I know is a miniOPL was created that can be booted from the HDD directly and so I thought what if the HDD-OSD can actually do the same thing.
The first was a POC, a proof of concept.
The HDD-OSD is from sony and so have restrictions.
Currently, or to be more precise since ~xmas 2011, you can install the HDD-OSD and/or the BBNAV on any fat ps2 with any hdd.

Even the newest OPL still has that problem and only real difference with this and OPL is some improvement tweaks for this one and still says OPL .8

The newest OPL says 0.9. Please take a look on first post of OPL main thread and the main OPL bitbucket repo (the ifcaro's one).

The OPL build used on the POC MBR KELF is commit 640 "https://bitbucket.org/ifcaro/open-ps2-loader/changesets/tip/640" which is EXACTLY same thing as whatever is on bitbucket now besides the "OPL 0.9" being displayed on the about screen. It also contains changes made by me to CDVDMAN IOP code and /ee_core/src/patches.c (for fixing a game which benefited from CDVDMAN changes, it no longer requires any patching).

So in a sense the build bundled into the KELF is even newer than whatever is on bitbucket. It just doesn't mention so. Also keep in mind that:

It's a POC (proof of concept)
It's a branch (not anything that was made by OPL developers themselves) and EXACTLY BECAUSE of the kind of complaints being made on this threat there's (there were, thanks RandQalan) a rule on this forum that forbids linking and posting compiled builds of developer's releases of OPL. See ? I transgressed that rule, not a single dev was angered or felt it was a bad thing YET I DO REGRET RELEASING IT. :P

    Lesson learned.
