    OHH, YES, sir!

After all, we are going to have to patch/replace the MBR... so the HDDOSD won't be used out of the box anyway.
The first part: Yes, atad patched mbr. And breaking the 28-bit/120GB barrier.
Second part: Why not booting in hdosdsys? As a bonus maybe an alternative, free configurable elf/kelf.

    Hi!

I have to sort some facts:
    - How big could an icon inside the beginning of the hdl partition max. be?
    - Was there a way to embed a elf/kelf in the partition header, too? I can't remember.

The icon specification is exactly the same as the one for Playstation 2 Memory Card saves, with the exception of the icon.sys file as the HDDOSD uses a text file instead of a binary file.

The KELF can be embedded with my FIXMBR program. Just substitute the KELF that it has with one that you have, and you are good to go. That
    includes Sony MBRs.

The HDDOSD cannot be obtained legally if you don't already own it, which most people don't.

    Hi!

    Thanks for your reply.

I am talking about the partition header of a PP.HDL.xxx partition.
As i remember it follows a static concept.
So i can't use any icon with any size without the danger to destroy other important datas.

The attached picture shows one of my hdds years ago.
I never used a text based icon for this... Heard about that the second time.

I meant embedding inside the header of a pp partition. Executed by starting the icon via hddosd.
I thought i read something about that...

    You said:

So a patched original mbr would be enough for the moment i think.
If it is regionless and atad-patched. As a bonus it could break the 120GB hdd size restrictions if this is possible.

You are talking about to build a completely new mbr, right?
The question is how compatible it would be as a freed replacement of the original?

What do you mean by "Static concept"?

The icon size is fixed, and so is the format. You need to follow what Sony has laid down. The specification for creating icons is the same for creating icons for Memory card saves.

If you break the standard, the HDDOSD will just treat the partition that your incompatible icon is installed on as "corrupted data".

Text-based icon? How could the icon be text-based? The icon has to be an image in the format the Sony specifies.

Oh, that.... I have the software for doing that, but I don't know whether that can be discussed out here yet. The giant enemy crab might not be too pleased... lol.

When we release the software, the source code might be released. The process for installing the OSD resources is not too easy as the attribute area (as Sony calls it) has no filesystem. You need to write in the resources and fill in a structure that specifies the location of the resources like the icon files and the boot KELF.

It might not have the same level as error checks as the Sony MBR does, as I haven't seen what the Sony MBR actually checks for... but so far the HDDOSD boots fine.

I've been doing this since 2011, when my SCPH-10000 was still alive but was without a functional HDDOSD (And was trying to install one there without the setup disc).

The BBNAV seemed to be installed on the disk, but my console lacked the HDD support modules to boot the BBNAV installation.
