And is it normal for it to not install normally with a Action Replay USB?
I deeply apologize if this is a repost. I searched but could not find a solution.

Edit: I should put that I am a total noob to the PS2 DEV scene! And I have a silver slim PS2!

Did you add them as the guide instructed? Did you read the guide that came with the release package?
Even a total noob can read, so it doesnt matter if you put that in the post or not. We created the guide for noobs, since advanced users dont need one.
Even the AR Max guide tells you to put the INSTALL folder on the USB root and the Installation Guide tells you what to put in that folder.

Swap Magic? the .ELF that the tutorial was referring to incase free_mcboot.elf gave you a black screen?
I should have also put that I followed that guide/tutorial word for word...if I hadn't, I wouldn't have used the FCEUltra.elf method

Those are 2 seperate guides, did you make sure those files were all inside the INSTALL folder, and not inside any other folder?
I wrote the guide based on actual installs i did to ensure it was correct.
I ammended the guide a little bit by adding some pics of the USB stick where files shouild be placed.

It seems many people are confused on placing those files and the correct filenames. When using a default CNF, before editing one or adding your own, that is a case sensitive filename structure to follow.
Its often over looked that windows uses lower case and this needs to be checked to be sure its .ELF and not .elf

Alright, I'm installing this again lol
SO! Why does the USB Pendrive (MAXDRIVE) fail to read FREE_MCBOOT.ELF but reads INSTALL\FMCB_CFG.ELF?

cause they are encoded differently. the AR elf loader phails quite badly, so you need to use it to load another loader elf (my favorate being swapmagic coder 3.8) using swapmagic, you can boot any other elf (might aswell load ulaunch, and load the installer from there, cause when I was reinstalling, 1.6 didnt load right directly threw swapmagic; it skipped the entire contents of the install folder)

It finally installed!
Since the only folder it was reading was Install\FMC_Config.elf or whatever, i placed the FCEUltra.elf in there and it loaded and after that it was all a breeze!
Thank you very much to all of you who replied!
