    Dear all,
I coming to my wits end. I'm trying to install fcmb so as to install argon on my
    PS2 Memory card.
Trouble is the only access I have to the memory card is via a original ps2linux (RTE) installation.

    Steps taken:
1.Using the PS2Media player linux installation on the memory card I replae the ps2media binary with the free_mcboot.elf binary renamed as ps2media.elf
    2. Start the ps2reality and it loads and starts the free_mcboot.elf .

    The problem is this:
    1. I can't create a INSTALL directory on the memory card in linux ( mkdir does not work on /mnt/mc00)
    2. I can't figure out how to make/force fcmb read a usb key as a source of install files.
    3. the ps2media hack only works in the binary is on the mc and not if it is on usb.
    4. when trying the same hack with argon it complains it cannnot find xmb.xml on the MC.

These problems may have something to do with ps2linux installing every thing in a directory BWLINUX that you cannot navigate up from.
    Any hints would be great.
    Thanks.

No need to try forcing it to search a USB device, its already embedded into FMCB's installer to do that.
Most likely the USB device your using isnt compatible, just try another and make sure its been formatted to FAT32.
    PS2 Consoles:
    SCPH-30001 [V4] - unmodded (2)
    SCPH-30001-R [V5] DMS4 Pro SE
    SCPH-50001-N [V9] CC 2.0 SLE
    SCPH-79001 [V16] Silver - unmodded

Thanks I'll see what other USB flashes I have lying around to try.
I thought maybe it might have been a incompatibilty with the technique I was using.

OK so I found a USB key that is compatible with the PS2 as I load the free_MCBOOT installer form it using the ps2reality hack.

I replace the ps2reality/ps2reality.elf on the USB with the FREE_MCBOOT.elf
When I go to normal install it still complains that it cannot find USBD.IRX etc. in INSTALL/MODULES.

These are on the USB disk in both MODULES and INSTALL/MODULES.

All working now Thanks for all your help.
It was lastly a question of setting the configuration files etc.

Now next step is getting argon to talk to my network shares but that is a diffrent thread.

I toiled through this a lot, and this thread and a few others got me home on this one. I figured I should share what I learned.

Basically you can use your linux kit and nothing but the internet to softmod your PS2 - don't need any burned discs, purchased swapmagics, etc.

    Here's what you need:

    -ps2linux kit
-a USB thumb drive that is detectable in the ps2 (Cruzer micros should work).
-A PS2 that will work with Free MC Boot.
-The noobie edition of Free MC Boot (to make life simpler) http://sksapps.com/exploit/freevast/Noobie_Package.rar
-PS2Reality Mediaplayer 1.50 - this is hard to find. I googled for the .rar of this. PS2R150.rar If someone can rehost this it would be great. I don't have a means to, but I do have the file. http://members.home.nl/p.linthorst/PS2R150.rar

    1. Install ps2 linux. Remember that the installation process should be done on a formatted hdd, and it will format one of your memory cards.

    2. Unrar the free mc boot noobie package and the ps2reality mediaplayer packages into separate folders on your PC. I do the unrarring on the PC because there isn't an unrar program for ps2linux (the source files I found for unrar wouldn't compile). Also burst the free mc noob package onto your thumb drive now. The thumb drive root should have FREE_MCBOOT.ELF in it, and the INSTALL dir with all the contained ELF's (like ESR.ELF).

    3. Transfer the unrarred files from your PC to your linux partition. This may be easier said than done. One way to do this is to download the 7-zip file manager and TAR the directories so they're one file and transport easily. Then use rapidshare to host the files. Download these again on your ps2linux partition with firefox 1.5. Or you can go through setting up samba, its more elegant but its probably going to take you longer.

    4. Untar these files on your linux partition, go superuser. Type the following:

    mount /mnt/mc00

    5. copy reality.elf to where you put your kernel images (should be /mnt/mc00)
copy the noob edition's BOOT.ELF (which is really ulaunchelf.elf) to /mnt/mc00/mcloader.elf (basically copying BOOT.ELF to the memory card and renaming it to mcloader.elf).

    6. # Add this line to your p2lboot.cnf
    "PS2Reality" reality.elf "" 203 /dev/hda1 reality PS2Reality's loader for RTE

You must boot in pal or ntsc mode. Example touch p2lboot.opt
    timeout=
    display=pal
    prevent.... blah blah blah

    7. ctrl-alt-delete. wait, then power down. Plug in your thumb drive and boot back up.

    8. Boot from the ps2linux disc 1, and choose boot, then the PS2Reality option. ulaunchelf.elf will load - from here you're home free.

    9. Browse to mass:/ and load FREE_MCBOOT.ELF and normal install.

    You're done.

The README.html file that comes with ps2reality media player is quite helpful.

Why do you need such old software in an modern setup of softmod ?
