Ok this is for all of you people with the problem of Swap Magic freezing just before the load program screen when using a USB device.
This happens to me aswell, heres a easy solution which works for me 100% of the time:
1. Turn off your PS2.
2. Insert your USB device.
3. Insert Swap Magic disc and power on your PS2.
4. It should load the disc but it will freeze. The USB light should now be flashing if it has one. (LEAVE THE USB IN THERE!) This means it has been detected.
5. Now simply reset your PS2, (LEAVE YOUR USB & SWAP MAGIC DISC IN THERE), now Swap Magic should load again and the USB device should also be detected. (IF THERES A LIGHT ON THE USB DEVICE IT WILL BE FLASHING)
The USB device gets detected the first time you boot Swap Magic and then stays detected unless you turn of your PS2, so the second time, when you reset your PS2, it doesnt have to detect the USB because its already been detected.
Don't forget to put folder SWAPMAGIC in the root of the USB and ELF file renamed to SMBOOT0.ELF in that folder. You can start the ELF by pressing UP(d-pad)+L1.
I tried this with USB device formatted with the FAT and FAT32 file system.
But the USB device has to be USB 1.1 compatible, with USB 2.0 it didn't work for me.
Hope this helps to everyone who have this problem.
Best regards.

it still freezes for me even when i do this
when swapmagic loads up the usb stick flashes then goes solid, and does exactly the game when i reset the ps2.

i recall i had to do the same thing with a few quirky usb mmc card readers. but it was with ulaunchelf, not swapmagic, and it was quite a long ago.
