I followed all the directions –

Hello. I am new here and am grateful for both this forum and any help you can lend.
Here are the facts: trying to do FFXED. I have a SCPH-30001 PS2, Swap Magic 3.6 (the one with the disc and tool - no mods). I tried this TWO ways: first is I took exactly the file that I attached to this post, put it on a flash drive (which did not work, more on this in a moment) and then I tried the cd route using the file from...hell I can't find it again. Basically I had some help from a friend who directed me to a file to put on a cd. It looked promising.
Neither worked worth a DAMN.
For the flash drive I did EXACTLY this, step-by-step: reformatted the flash drive in fat32. Put the files on the attached file to this post on it. Put flash in PS2, turned on. Then I put in the Swap Magic 3.6 disc. It went to the splash page...and remained there. It would never move beyond that! Wtf?
So I tried the cd route as it should have been a sure bet. Turned on PS2, put in swap magic 3.6 disc, got to the appropriate screen, used the swap magic tool to put in the disc I made, and it said it was "not a valid PS2 disc" and it would not do anything with it. It never prompted anything whatsoever.
you need to create a folder on the USB stick called SWAPMAGIC.
Then extract the FMCB noobie package into that folder.
the next you rename FREE_MCBOOT.ELF to SWAPMAGIC.ELF
from there, you just plug the stick in to the ps2 and run the swapmagic disc to boot the installer.
edit - just now noticed the comment
used the swap magic tool to put in the disc I made
if you intend on using swapmagic to install, you need a pressed original copy. not one you download and burn.
Dude - THANKS! I am EXTREMELY, and I mean that to an extreme, inept with technology. So let me make sure I understand this: I will take the flash drive, and in it create a folder named "SWAPMAGIC". I will drag and drop a compressed swapmagicpackage into it, unzip the file and then rename the file as you mentioned. This all occurs within the SWAPMAGIC folder - do I put any files in the root level of the flash drive? Thank you very much for your help. It is really appreciated.
I did not download this. I bought it directly from swap magic. But if you dont want to modify your ps2, you need the swap magic tool. I mean, it should be original - the cd is all nicely made with a nice swap magic label on it and all.
I am the person who has been trying to help this guy install FMCB. I also posted a thread here (Having trouble installing FMCB). Read that to get a more accurate idea of the problems we have been having.

Yeah, that should work. What he was trying to do was to have Swap Magic boot uLaunchElf and then have that run the installer.

His Swap Magic is the real deal. He was trying to run a uLaunchElf boot CD that he burned.

If you follow the directions Bootleg mentioned it will work..
So what Bootlegninja means is to take the contents of this attached file and have it as the only thing on your flash drive. Then run Swap Magic and it should boot the FMCB installer. But if Swap Magic could not boot uLaunchElf as we have previously tried, do you think it can boot the installer?

Reason: removed FMCB install package that contains no license agreement
This is what I did after your instructions - is it right?
no, you did not follow my instructions.
here is a swapmagic friendly version of the n00b package. DO NOT MODIFY ANYTHING IN THIS. YES I'M TALKING TO YOU. DO NOT MODIFY ANYTHING IN THE RAR!!!
Just drag the SWAPMAGIC folder to your usb drive. do not place it in another folder.
then plug it into your ps2 and boot up swapmagic. I can not make it any more simple than this other than going to your house and personally installing it.
and no, I will not come to your house and install it.
