Hi guys, I have a V9 SCPH 50001 fat ps2 with a 'Toxic' chip (DMS 4 PRO I think) that will not read my original DVD games or backups smoothly (freezes). DVD movies play fine though. Anyways, I want to start using a harddrive for my PS2 and would like to know what would the easiest way to do this? I'd like a small HDD since I don't plan on storing a whole lot of games in it. I will have fmcb installed on my memory card as soon as I get it back from a installer. Any help will be great help. Thanks!

copy games to your harddrive with winhiip and launch them with Toxic os

There is no Toxic os in the boot option for my modchip. I may have to upgrade the modchip bios to get the toxic os boot feature? From what I understand, to upgrade the modchip, I'll need the fmcb to launch the toxic os file as explained here, as my lens is faulty:

Also, I have a laptop, so if I get a IDE hdd, will I be able to connect the hdd to my laptop to copy games with winhiip?

yes you will need an external usb HDD enclosure. i use one all the time to transfer games to the HDD using winhiip.its the quickest way for me. if you dont want to buy an enclosure then just the ide to usb adaptor will do fine...

like spud42 said get a ide to usb adapter, but if u do get one dont get the combo ones (usb to sata\ide 2.5\3.5) because the combo ones usually cant be used from ps2 usb port, if you will ever want to use it from there

So, using memor32 is a way I can install Toxic OS without fmcb and a dead lens? Can you please tell me how?

And as far as the hdd is concerned, is the ide to usb adapter the only way to go about it? I am trying to find the cheapest (yet effective) as possible..

I cant help with the Memor32 part, but you only need to be able to boot the installer ELF off a USB. You can do it the same way you were going to install FMCB, except just run the ToxicOS installer instead. Make sure you also grab a USBD.IRX if you want to use ToxicOS and a USB stick as ToxicOS doesnt have its own driver for USB.

From a Laptop, you will need to use either the cable or enclosure (removable type) or if you have access to a Desktop, you can connect the HDD directly to an internal IDE ribbon, setting the jumper to Slave if you use the Primary IDE ribbon.

Heres a useful guide once you get ToxicOS installed on your chip:

    http://www.sksapps.com/dms4/Toxic/toxic_tutorial.html
    PS2 Consoles:
    SCPH-30001 [V4] - unmodded (2)
    SCPH-30001-R [V5] DMS4 Pro SE
    SCPH-50001-N [V9] CC 2.0 SLE
    SCPH-79001 [V16] Silver - unmodded

if you want to buy memor32
you simply download MEMENTO Firmware for it from HERE
and then u can boot from dev1\2\3 (mc\hdd\usb)
the best part about memor32 is that you can connect it to your PC using a standard USB/MiniUSB cable.
from there you can copy the the toxic install elf named BOOT.ELF to memor32 through usb or u can copy uLE 4.39 and do the rest trough it ^_^
MEMENTO gives you the possibility to launch Homebrew applications in 3 different ways, from MEMOR32 Memory Card, from a USB Memory Stick, and from the HDD.

To launch the application, the same must be RENAMED as "BOOT.ELF" (or one of the three other available names) and saved saved in a "BOOT directory" in the location from where you want to launch it.

DEV1 Is used to launch applications from Memor32 Memory Card.
The correspondent DEVolution mode is invoked by pressing the R1/R2/L1/L2 pad buttons on PAD1 at the boot of the PS2:

    R1 : /BOOT/BOOT.ELF
    R2 : /BOOT/BOOT2.ELF
    L1 : /BOOT/BOOT3.ELF
    L2 : /BOOT/BOOT4.ELF
What are the Features of MEMENTO ?
Works on V3-V16 PS2 (from SCPH-3000x model to SCPH-7900x model)
    Boot PS2 back-up from DVD-R.
Boot PS2 back up from USB HDD.
    Boot PS2 back-ups from HDD.
Support for PS2 CD based games.
Dev1 mode to launch up to 4 different applications from the memory card.
Dev2 mode to launch up to 4 different applications from the HDD or USB-HDD.
Dev3 mode to launch up to 4 different applications from USB memory sticks.
    Launch emulators and Homebrew Games.
    Plays Movies and Mp3s.

So to boot the installer ELF (of Toxic OS?) off a USB, I will need the fmcb, correct? (TehJawknee from this forum is installing it for me)

As I do not have access to a desktop, I'll have to use my laptop. From my laptop, are you saying I'll need to use a IDE to USB cable or get a enclosure?

Which is the better way of doing it?

u dont need a enclosure, i dont use one anyway
    my reasons are
-its a box... and usually without fans... its better to have the harddrive outside.
-it will be less fiddling with the adapter, because u only need to connect it and with the box u have to screw unscrew close the lid and
-the box is more fragile because of the way its connected from the inside, u can rip the ide ribbon if u pull it to hard, and the wires of the molex (power connector) can come off after allot of usage, if u noticed the ide adapter is made out of solid plastic, and the power adapter is the same, u'll have a hard time destroying them.

but that just my experience and opinions of it

-get the box if u want it to look good
-get the adapter if u want it to stay well longer (<== my choice)
