Help softmodding my slim PS2?
Help softmodding my slim PS2? –
Hey guys, so I've been following the guide here for the gameswap trick, and I have managed to block my sensors so that I can swap out the games. Anyway, I do not own a copy of Agent Under Fire, but I read in another post that if I took Ratchet and Clank: Up your Arsenal and replaced the sly2 ELF file, then attempted to load the Sly 2 demo, it would launch uLaunchElf and let me install FreeMCBoot. So I did as the tutorial instructed, I swapped in boot ELF for Sly2 ELF, and edited it into an ISO file. I then took my original copy of UYA, put it in the PS2, and let it run until it got to the main menu. Then I took out the original disc and put my edited disc in, and hit the buttons to activate the Sly2 demo. The screen then goes black and kicks me out saying "Please insert an original PS2 format disc.". What should I do?
(P.S: My PS2 is a SCPH-79001.)
Sorry if I'm bad at explaining this, first time trying to mod a console. XD
Sounds like a sensor isn't properly blocked to me an triggering the PS2 to re-detect the security ring.

Hi! I am new to the forum so forgive me if I'm not able to correctly instruct you; however, there is one thing that I didn't see you mention that I presume you would've had you done it: Changing the TOC in the ISO file.
If you go to the installation tab of the Free McBoot homepage you will see that it gives instructions on EXACTLY how to prepare the ISO. Note that the instructions are for 007 but they should still apply in every area. Just make sure that you used Apache v1.1 to edit the TOC of the ISO and that you used the uncompressed BOOT ELF and renamed it accordingly.
Let me know if this fixes the issue or if you actually completed these steps and I will try to help you from there!
Ah, forgot to mention that, yes I changed the size in the TOC to the size of the ELF file. But thanks for the reply.
If the game runs with the tray open, wouldn't that mean they're all blocked? Or are there some other hidden sensors for the sole purpose of detecting a disc swap? I have the tray open the whole time, so not sure what could be causing it
EDIT: I found out there's a sensor in the back of the PS2 that you have to open the thing up to get at, but this sensor does not exist on the 79001 model. So I'm starting to doubt this is the case...

Okay, just thought I would mention that. It seems that people have been reporting that the disc swap is time-dependent, so you might be switching too early. Apparently the security check is going to be executed when you load an ELF (not certain about this though) but if you wait until the check is finished to swap, it should work. Or, you could do what I did and go to GameStop and pick up a copy of 007 for $2 :3

Reason: Additional information added concerning sensor.
Heheh, just tried to buy a copy of 007 an hour ago, they don't have any here. But yes, it does seem to be checking the "is it pirated" sector right before it loads the demo, so I'll try to get the timing right.
Edit: I finally got it working! Just used MLB 08 and kept swapping the discs out any time the laser moved, since it looked like it was doing two checks. For anyone trying to use this game, here's how I did it:
Replaced NTGUI and NTGUI~1 and burned that to a disc.
Put original in, boot to main menu, swap for burnt disc, keep real one ready to swap back.
Go to Online, and then network configuration.
Disc should stop spinning, then start again. Watch the laser carefully, it will start in the middle of the disc, and then move to the bottom. Swap original disc in as fast as you can while the laser moves.
Laser will swap back to top of the disc, quickly put burnt disc back in before it finishes moving.
Laser will go back to bottom again, put original in while it moves.
Finally, laser will move back to the top, swap the burnt disc in while it moves. If you did it right, at this point, uLaunchELF will boot. If you see a black screen, you didn't swap the burnt disc back fast enough, try again.
Tip: You should be most concerned about pulling the disc out while the laser moves, the reading allows some lag when trying to find the data, but if it starts loading the other disc's information, it'll corrupt the memory and you'll have to start over..
This method could be used with any game that has NTGUI elf files really, just follow the template, memorize the movement of the laser. You want your original copy in when it reads the area closest to the hole, and the burnt copy in the second it moves away.
Hope this helps someone. ^_^

Reason: Got it working! :D
I'm glad to hear you got it working! That's what I thought might be happening with your other attempts... Well, anyway, welcome to the world of FreeMcBoot :3
Great job man.
Its nice to see that there are still some people around willing to experiment.
Personally I would have taken the easy route and just bought a copy of swapmagic for $20
But I know sometimes $20 is just inconvenient. (I always use the HDD hotswap trick to mod my OG xbox's) Too bad the PS2 slims dont come with easily replaceable internal storage =(
