no, I don't have a modchip, just a regular SCPH-500004 I recently got. I'm currently working on modding a network adaptor I got in the mail this morning to fit in my old 2.5inch laptop HDD. Consider that I was thinking about buying a flip-top cover just to play policenauts and some other PSX gems I missed because I never had a psone :cry:
Just a quick update about the situation. freeMCBoot doesn't just make the PS2 refuse to load PSX originals, it prevents PS2 blue pressed discs (CDs?) from loading as well. It was kind of expected considering the similarities between the formats.
As in the case of PSX discs, if I boot up the PS2 without the freemcboot memcard, the disc is correctly recognized and loaded as it should. There's definitively something going on here, not just a scratched disc or a bad lens (I can safely exclude that). Do you want me to dump some more in depth info about my system so that devs can look into this?
EDIT: The PS2 actually doesn't read any original disc anymore, PSX or PS2-DVD or PS2-CD. how could I miss that?! I guess I was too much intent in playing ESR backups! ;) no, seriously, do you know what's going on here? this issue seems somewhat more documented in the internet.

ESR works. CD music works. But not PSX games nor PS2 purple CDs. I can actually play PS2 dvds if I insert and then reset so that the Ps2 starts the game automatically or I either get the red screen.
How have you tried booting originals? Are you just booting them "normally", or have you also tried letting the OSD appear and entering into the Browser, followed by inserting the disc and selecting it from the Browser menu? Also, not sure if this would have any effect, but in the case of PS2 originals, have you tried toggling "Skip Disc Boot" in FMCB Configurator and (if turning it off) using the following methods? One could also try going into uLE and using the MISC/PS2Disc option, or by navigating in the File Browser to cdfs: and launching the boot ELF (SLxx_xxx.xx) directly.
There's some minor problems with the CDVD init code made by ffgiever into FMCB. It's made from reverse engineering his own PS2 software and not all PS2 units are made with the exact same chips.
Since I have several PS2 units of different regions there's a bunch of them which have issues with his code. The most common problem is the PS2 freeze on boot while the tray or lid is open.
I doubt it happens on ffgirver's PS2 because there's some of mine who also do not have any issues with it. :)
It's just a case of code which did not receive enough testing before release.
I don't remember whether I told you about this, but I certainly did tell Silverbull: I have reverse-engineered a part of the Sony OSD EE-side libcdvd library, and have access to functions like sceCdBootCertify() from the EE like the Sony OSD does.Quote:

I don't know about the implementation of ffgriever's CD/DVD drive initialization code in v1.8, but it does a lot of redundant things in v1.7 (And CD/DVD OSD configuration is broken).

His code sends S-commands. But the problem is that most of them are redundant as he probably didn't understand what they were for. Some calls are actually made by MCMAN as it invokes SECRMAN to authenticate the Memory Card, and some others are done by the OSD as it reads data from the CD/DVD drive like the console's OSD parameters from the NVRAM.
