Just a quick update about the situation. freeMCBoot doesn't just make the PS2 refuse to load PSX originals, it prevents PS2 blue pressed discs (CDs?) from loading as well. It was kind of expected considering the similarities between the formats.
As in the case of PSX discs, if I boot up the PS2 without the freemcboot memcard, the disc is correctly recognized and loaded as it should. There's definitively something going on here, not just a scratched disc or a bad lens (I can safely exclude that). Do you want me to dump some more in depth info about my system so that devs can look into this?
EDIT: The PS2 actually doesn't read any original disc anymore, PSX or PS2-DVD or PS2-CD. how could I miss that?! I guess I was too much intent in playing ESR backups! ;) no, seriously, do you know what's going on here? this issue seems somewhat more documented in the internet.
