I'm guessing so, seems too much of a coincidence not to be

I would like to report that I have also had the same ulaunch .cnf problem as spkleader. If I put the .cnf file in the same directory as ulaunch (renamed to EXECUTE1.ELF) it will black screen, if I try to load it manually it will crash ulaunch.
If you want ULE, HDL, etc to boot from both MC slots using lukasz's MPLUS-LOADER2.ELF you need to put that file in the BESLES-00000 MP folder twice (renamed to EXECUTE1.ELF and EXECUTE2.ELF).
I'll test to see if it will crash when I boot ULE and .cnf from a USB drive, and report back.
I realize this problem may have to do with the way he compiled his loader program, so if this doesn't belong in this thread let me know, or just delete it (mods )
I just noticed that this boot method also skips the BIOS screen and is faster than the independence exploit. Thanks Jimmi and friends!

@urbigbro and @spkleader :
I havent tried the jimmi "exploit" yet but I suspect to know what's happening, since I see the same behaviour with my MemoryPlus64. With MemoryPlus64, this happens also with uLaunchELF when I save the config *and* select "Disc Control On"... As soon I change this option in the configuration editor and select OK (for both saving and applying) the uLaunchELF freezes and next time I try to boot it, the screen keeps black.

Personally I came across the "feature" when I was compiling a project of mine and I loaded the cdrom driver (the cdvd.irx) - my program freezed as soon the program tried to init the cdrom.
In other words : Datel's MemoryPlus and Jimmi's exploit seem to have this issue in common (so I guess it wasn't a deliberate feature from Datel to stop the CDROM access from their card) so that the CD/DVD drive stays unuseable.
Regarding uLaunchELF : As soon the "Disc Control On" is activated the CD drive is being accessed and the freezing occurs. And because the saved config has this option, the same will occur next boot time of uLaunchELF.
The solution to prevent the freezing and yet allow uLaunchELF config saving is ... don't touch the Disc Control option
Unfortunately, this might be a serious issue to owers of a PS2 without a HDD trying to run the SMS media player : The CD drive contents is the first to be listed after startup, so it immediatly freezes after trying that, so SMS renders unusable. If you have an HDD installed you're lucky since the HDD directory list will occur instead of the CD dir list and SMS will not freeze.
I believe this is possible to fix, since Memento team did it Also, the updated DVDplayer from Sony also is launched this way and it can of course access the dvd drive
I've also just loaded the LaunchELF using the following method:
1) Do the usual things described in the RAR
2) I wrote LaunchELF to my Memor32 w/ Memento
3) Booted LaunchELF and took out my Memor32 and replaced it with a Sony 8MB one.
4) Opened HDProject - McFlasher from my Pendrive (Kingmax 2GB)
5) Rebooted with the Pendrive and the Sony memcard.
Then it didn't load the Memory manager but rather LaunchElf. So I can verify it works (I tested on a v11 (or v14, dunno?) SCPH-77004 PAL.
However I can also verify the disc-issue. I think it is because the Datel product and Jimmi's product make the PS2 think it is updating it's DVD-drive, which needs to have a disc to update. This is not the case with Memento because they fake a DVD-disc to trick the PS2 into thinking it is playing a 'normal' DVD disc of some kind while going into 'game mode'.
So in my humble opinion the solution could be that we have to make the PS2 think it is reading an update disc/DVD but is in fact reading a homebrew app or game. That is how we can get the DVD drive to unlock, because it is now sitting there to wait for the update disc/DVD disc.
Anyway, great work Jimmi and others! You all did a great job on coming this far!
PS. If you happen to accidently patch your Memor32, just connect it to the computer and format it with the Savegame manager Then it works again just fine :P
EDIT: I am currently dumping my Memor32 with Memento on it. It looks like it is running a BIN instead of an ELF from inside an Memento dir. However this dir IS recognized by the Playstation's internal Memory Card manager but NOT by the Memor32 manger (coincidence :P?). The odd thing is that it is just called 'memento' instead of a SLUS/SCES code which is more usual.
I will update you all when [s]I have it running on my Sony 8MB card[/s] I know more :P
EDIT2:I also checked the memento.bin file in the memento folder and it only contains this:
which just means Memento..
4D 45 4D 45 4E 54 4F 00 00
I will try to put these files on my Sony MC and see what happens.....

First sorry for my english, and great thanks for your Works.
I've tried your release yesterday with "unchipped" PS2 V9 Pal whit an 8MB MC, all done like in the instructions in the first time. But at this time, I didn't known that I need to copy BOOT-FREE-OSD fowlder in USB or the elf in MC. So I tried without this last step and I had just a black screen (it just try to boot from MC).
I think that it was be an little manipulation error, I format my MC with MCFormat (MCkiller) a first time, it was done.
And retry to flash my MC with the option "Datel Never Formated" at "Yes"... it was done and now, my MC is not recognized nowhere. I've tried to reformat with MCkiller (elf and CD), nothing... try to re-flash from HDProject - MC flasher... Not yet.
My question is just: Did I lost my MC for ever? It not a great matter, but I just need to know. And prevent everyone having my configuration who want to try this option : Dangerous
And Thanks angain for all your Works
Ok, I successfully got this working on my Official Sony 8MB Memory Card, but it fails to run on my chinese 64MB Card. When looking at both cards from ulaunchelf, they both contain the exact same files, but only the 8MB one runs.
With the 64MB card plugged into either slot, the PS2 just hangs on boot at a black screen. As soon as I unplug it again, the PS2 will boot to the browser.
Does this only works for the ps2 the mcid.bin was created on? Because i tried using it on a ps2 that doesn't read cds and it doesn't work
Works great its just that the faulty playstation doesn't read slot one if the mc is fully pushed in. I got it working on a official sony 8mb, Max Memory 16mb and just about to try a 8mb madcatz. Thanks

That is what i did too i think, i may have set "yes" for that option, cause your description matches my problem.

Now that i think about it, what is this option for? "Datel Never Formated"
Im going to assume i did select YES for the "Datel Never Formated" option and this was the cause for my MC to "appear" dead. It was late and i was tired so its probably what happened.
WARNING: DO NOT select yes for "Datel Never Formated" in MCFlasher for Sony 8MB.
For those who have, i have been able to bring it back with the MC Manager in AR Max EVO format option. The card will appear as red in the manager, so just press Square button and say yes to format. Dont use the MemPlus Manager, it wont work to format, it will just freeze.

SCPH-30001 [V4] - unmodded (2)
SCPH-30001-R [V5] DMS4 Pro SE
SCPH-50001-N [V9] CC 2.0 SLE
SCPH-79001 [V16] Silver - unmodded
I believe it's for a brand new card that has never been formatted. I may be mistaken.
