When booting, in the 10k family the japanese HDD utility disc will show an additional option to install the "memorycard system driver" which will generate a "BIEXEC-SYSTEM" folder with a NEW replacement OSD. The new OSD completely replaces the one that was in the ROM. Every time the IOP and EE resets, the PS2 will re-load it. When you eject a Sony utility disc it goes back to the browser, just like uLE would in a PS2 with modchip. Now with this boot method there's no OSD to fall back to, instead the uLE is now the OSD itself... lol

The encryption exists on ALL retail models and very few dev units (the ones that came with HDD bundled) but the dev units usually won't run retail software for the HDD (there will be a special utility disc for a dev/test PS2 use it's HDD)
