Hi guys. I wanted to ask if someone has used the free mcboot exploit on a 77000 ps2 and for how long and if it caused him any issues on his laser? Thanks in advance. By the way we could turn this topic into an area where everyone that has used free mcboot can post his console model and how long he has used it, if it gave him any laser problem, if he uses romeo mod or another laser protection system

So that people like me who are afraid to softmod their ps2 because of the infamous laser syndrome can rest easy and apply it without any fear. Thank you in advance!!!

Since FMCB doesn't make any use of the PS2 laser, I don't quite see how it could damage it. Plus, I've never heard of such a case. So I'd tend to say it's impossible that FMCB could damage the laser. What could damage the laser is the game swap trick that can be used in order to install FMCB, but that's a different scenario. Plus, you don't actually HAVE to use it, since there are other methods available.

I've been using it on my SCPH-77006 console since 2009 (Cheap HP DVD+/-R discs and Swapmagic 3.6 were used on it since 2007), and no side effects were noted.
I've been using FMCB on my modified SCPH-39006 console ever since I got it in 2010, and it still works great (Other than the small issue it has with the A/V port or the graphics hardware).

I've also been using FMCB on my unmodified SCPH-10000 console ever since I got it in 2010, and it runs with no problems.

The SCPH-75000 and newer PS2s are safe from direct any problems with their laser units, because Sony had removed all forms of sabotage from these consoles.

Only older consoles (Especially the SCPH-5x000 series of consoles) had problems with the laser deteriorating very quickly due to Sony's sabotage, and because of the primitive hardware used.

Of course, you should still take care of your console by using original discs and high-quality recordable media.
    Unmodified SCPH-77006 with SM 3.6
SCPH-39006 with M-chip modchip, SCPH-10281 NA and refurb Seagate 80GB HDD
SCPH-10000 v1.00 with SCPH-10190 PCMCIA NA and SCPH-20400 HDD unit

Thanx SP193. "Sabotage" that's the appropriate word since that's exactly what Sony did. http://www.darkplanets.co.uk/la6508/ When someone installed a modchip on a 5xxxx or 70000 it would start sending high voltages on the laser coils and burn them while if one didn't modify it usually nothing would happen to the laser. My nephew's unmodified 50000 still runs excellent. So what I was afraid of is what if the free mcboot exploit also triggered the sabotage but now I feel safe thanks to you SP193. Thanks again. It would be a good idea as I said if other people shared their experience on free mcboot with their ps2 models.

been using FMCB on mine and my sons console for 3 or 4 years now. no laser problems , we dont use it!!! internal HDD and hdloader recently replaced with OPL. only thing that might damage your laser is cheap disks with ESR patched games... but so few dont work with OPL that i can live without them.
my consoles are in ny sig and i think my sons is a 39002 cant remember exactly. the only things i have to do is remove the drive every now and then to remove games he is sick of and add new ones...lol

I'm using FMCB since day1 and had a lot of testing to do, especially when the disc-detection-routine was created and the system-init was incommplete.

Those two things are the only things, where I can imagine a fault caused by FMCB.
Still,... I never saw or heard of any issues like that, caused by FMCB.

In fact ALL models since SCPH-10000 have the problem. It's made so the magnetic coils and the laser diode beam intensity are software controlled. If the DVD drive CPU crashes for any reason the lens will be left on whatever state they are as (so if they're moving at the time the DVD drive CPU crashed, they burn down).

It was not until SCPH-3000xR series when they added the "square pads" on the DVd drive data bus the blow up behavior was quite mild. After the R series it got quite bad. It peaked on 5000x and early slim consoles. SONY never removed the "suicide code" as it's part of the drive design (on normal DVD drives the DSP controls the laser coils too) and instead they added an circuit that disconnects the DVD lens coils from the driver circuit if the DVD CPU crashes. But no, that doesn't turn the laser diode off so the laser diode still can blow.

    SONY rocks :P

Anyway, it's modchips that cause the DVD drive to blow (or really bad discs of even DVD Video type on un-modded consoles). So even if your console has no modchip, an BAD DISC can ruin your laser.

    Warning is given.

Good media is aways worth the cost.

So no issues using high quality DVD-V ESR backups on a 50003?
I have few disc's that I burnt months ago that no longer work on my 50003 it won't read the ESR sector anymore I think, but they work fine on my 39003 is this due to the low quality 50003 laser? neither consoles are modchipped.

Do Memento patched images and images that just have manually added DVD-V data also work with ESR? or do they specifically need the ESR sector data that is made with the ESR patchers?
also does the LBA of the game files move when the image is patched or does it always add the ESR sector / DVD-V data at the end of the disc so as not to interfere?

Even if the coils do not burn, reading DVDR puts an extra strain on the laser diode. Means it will die faster of course.
