hahah bootlogos; now that I have your attention I was also curious about FMCB and v230 BIOS PS2's. I know FMCB doesn't work for them, but, was wondering which part? Is it only the "Booting from MemCard" feature?

For example is it possible to use FMCB from say DVD using other homebrew loading methods, and then after FMCB loads it can access the Memory Card for things like configuration / loading other apps / etc?

I see a "Run Free McBoot" at the installer window, but, is that button only possible after you install it to a Memory Card?

If something like this is possible, it would be a nice feature; so all the newer PS2's could still use McBoots interface to load homebrew eventhough they still need a swapdisc/modchip/etc to start-up FMCB. Or is this already done and I just missed it? Or not possible with v230 BIOS?

uLE v4.42a can launch the hacked OSDSYS even on non-compatible PS2s through the OSDSYS function, found alongside the other built-in programs under MISC in the file browser. Still have to boot uLE with another method, but once it boots it can load the hacked OSDSYS. AFAIK FMCB still needs to be installed to the MC, even if it won't boot on your particular PS2 (but, as a positive side effect, if you later acquire a compatible PS2 then you'll already have FMCB installed and ready to go).

What LocalH says above is quite true.

Another thing which I've also tested is that as long as you have some way of booting uLE, you can also use it to start the FMCB installer and use that just as you would on an older console, even though you are running bios v2.30. And an MC with FMCB installed in this way will work identically to one installed in the same way on an older console with bios v2.20.

So it appears that Sony only removed/disabled the piece of code that looks for an OSDSYS upgrade at power on or reset, but left all the other related parts untouched, just as they were in bios v2.20.

SONY just decided that at this point there will be no more updates to the PS2 system so they simply NOP'd out the routines that check for OSD and DVD player updates.

The point now is that they can no longer change their mind. It's a final decision
