FMCB on SCPH-70001 problem with Codebreaker in main menu

I am helping a friend set up FMCB on his PS2. He has model SCPH-70001, and FMCB is up and running. I gave him a copy of my Codebreaker.elf (which is NOT the hacked HDLoader version). When he adds it to his main menu and tries to boot it from there, his PS2 just reboots FMCB instead of starting Codebreaker.

I know it is something about his PS2, because he sent me his exact FREEMCB.CNF file and I booted FMCB with it. The Codebreaker option appeared on the main menu and booted properly when I selected it. My PS2 is an older SCPH-5000x model. To complicate matters, when he uses uLaunchElf to boot the Codebreaker.elf directly, it DOES work. I can't figure out what the problem is, perhaps a conflict with FMCB and his PS2?

Is this a known bug?

Thats a normal response when FMCB cant locate the ELF its supposed to boot.

Have him check his config again and make sure the apps are in the locations configured in his CNF. Its often a simple typo or a moved file we dont always realize needs to remain there to work. Make sure he sets the 3 search locations( E1, E2, E3), so FMCB will search all of them. Also re-check the filename spelling that it matches the CNF exactly. He might have changed them from what you gave him.

If its from a USB device, perhaps he needs to update the USB drivers in the SYS-CONF folder for FMCB to use. He can get the same ones used in uLE v4.39 from the Official uLE release thread.

He has even sent me a screenshot of his flash drive, and everything is in the correct place. If the problem is drivers, then why does it work when he loads in in uLaunchElf? He has the same install of FMCB as I do, with the same drivers and everything.

This is certainly a glitch in FMCB. My friend now has an older fat PS2 and it is working correctly.

has he tried a different usb stick? not all brands/models are recognized properly.

Yeah that's what it sounds like bro, NON Compatible USB drive.

If the problem was the USB drive, then why did it start working as soon as he started using an older PS2?

Was his PS2 modified in any way? (Mod-chips etc.)
Some mod-chips were known to have caused problems with certain PS2 programs/loaders...

If his PS2 had a mod-chip installed, try to get him to switch it off before starting FMCB.

The slim models (especially newer ones) seems to have had the USB drivers changed by Sony and are a bit less compatible than those older FAT consoles. Dont know why they changed it, but perhaps they were relying on the Games to use a USB driver embedded into the game or on the disc.

Sony never intended the USB ports to be used for anything other than accessories, like a keyboard, mouse, eyetoy,etc.

I have just tested this with another guy who has a model SCPH-70003 PS2. He experienced the exact same problem: Codebreaker would boot via uLaunchElf but not through the main menu. Trying to boot from the main menu only caused FMCB to restart, just like the first guy. Neither men had modchips or anything of the sort.
