FMCB not seeing elfs in the install folder
FMCB not seeing elfs in the install folder –
12-17-2008,12:07 PM
Hi there. I am a noob so appologies in advance. I have downloaded the FMCB noobie package with all the ellfs already in the installer folder. I have put in onto two seperate flash drives in with the installer folder in the root, and renamed FREEE_MCBOOT.ELF as BOOT.ELF and placed that in a boot folder. I can load the elf just fine but when it comes to installing fmcb it claims it cannot see BOOT.ELF in the installer folder, yet I can see it when I connect the stick to my pc. Has anyone else had this problem?
I also tried to create an iso of the installer by following the CDGENPS2 tutorial but I can't patch it with my momento patcher as it says it has no udf descriptor.
Please help, I have searched and can't find a solution!

The USB drive must be formatted in FAT32, not NTFS. Please check.
SCPH-90004a CB [8A] BIOS v220 // FreeMcBOOT 1.8b // ESR beta r9b DVDV Direct // Sony 8MB Memory Card
ESRPatchJAVA 0.24a // ImgBurn 2.5.0.0 // Verbatim DVD-R @ 16x // Pioneer DVR-216D

Thanks, I did freshly format one of them, although I only got the option of FAT, so no idea if it 16 or 32. I will try and check shortly. Would it still run the installer elf off the memory stick if though if it was the wrong format?

Everyone is a noob at first, but hopefully that is just a passing phase...

Why two ?
One should do fine, though it never hurts to have a backup I guess.
, and renamed FREEE_MCBOOT.ELF as BOOT.ELF and placed that in a boot folder. I can load the elf just fine
This part I don't understand. Why do you do this ?
Normally the "Free_MCBOOT.ELF" must be launched from the same directory where you have the "INSTALL/" folder. Otherwise it will not find the files to be installed. It can only generate the main boot file, but all the other stuff will be missing.
I assume your way of doing it has to do with your console boot method, which you have not yet mentioned, but it still can't work right...
but when it comes to installing fmcb it claims it cannot see BOOT.ELF in the installer folder, yet I can see it when I connect the stick to my pc. Has anyone else had this problem?
That is because the installer was launched in another directory than the one where you have the rest of the installer package. This can't work right.
I also tried to create an iso of the installer by following the CDGENPS2 tutorial but I can't patch it with my momento patcher as it says it has no udf descriptor.
That is because you created a CD iso and they can not be used by Memento.
(I assume you meant "Memento" rather than "momento" which you wrote.)
This also explains your use of the boot folder you mentioned above.
Drop the CD idea and go back to the original method.
Only this time you don't put the FMCB installer elf on the MC as "BOOT.ELF", but instead use the intended "BOOT.ELF" (originally from release of uLaunchELF (aka: uLE)). You should find the uLE "BOOT.ELF" file inside the "INSTALL/" folder of the FMCB noobie package.
This will let you boot into a super-simple uLE menu with FileBrowser defined for the Circle button, so press that to reach the uLE FileBrowser. There the Circle button is the generic button for 'OK'/'Enter'/'Run', so you can use it to navigate to the correct "mass:/" device where you have the "INSTALL/" folder and the "FREE_MCBOOT.ELF" program file, so move the highlight to the program and press Circle to start it.
Since the installer now is launched in the same directory where you have the "INSTALL/" folder it will be able to find everything you need for a complete installation. (That's assuming you didn't change the package in any way.)

NTFS formatted flash drive...
I think the PS2 can only see FAT and FAT32 file systems.
I have this "problem" too but I don't install anything with FMCB except FMCB_CFG so it's not a problem for me FMCB not seeing the BOOT.ELF(ule)...he is inside the card and in INSTALL folder but FMCB still say that there is no BOOT.ELF found

The choice of FAT without numbers always means FAT16.
Are you using a bugged or obsolete OS ?
WinXP always gives me the option to use FAT32.
You could try using the ul_format.exe utility from the USBAdvance release, but be careful to use the correct drive letter in its command line. You do NOT want to reformat your PCs boot drive to FAT32...

I don't think so, and if it does it is still likely to do something wrong.
The PS2Dev drivers are not fully compatible with anything other than FAT32.

Fully correct operation requires FAT32.

But how are you launching the installer elf ?
In order to find the "INSTALL/" folder and its contents the installer elf needs to be launched from the same directory where the "INSTALL/" folder is stored, and by a program which correctly passes the launch path as primary launch parameter (like uLaunchELF does).
Another thing to check is that you really use the v1.8b version of the installer, as the original v1.8 installer was bugged in its path handling. (The noobie pack should be updated to v1.8b as far as I know.)

Thanks for the replies, following Dlanors instructions has done the trick
I now have an error saying my 8mb save card is too full and the kids are using the 64mb one right now, so time to delete some saves. I was using a Memor32 and Memento firmware to boot off my memory stick, and I was using XP pro with sp2 to format the stick. The reason I was using two memory sticks was initialy because I thought one was faulty with not seeing the files in the correct directory.

There are some small USB sticks that will not give the option to format to FAT32, i only have one that only displays FAT as a format option and its an AR Max 16MB drive.
I dont know if its just the AR Max bios that prevents the FAT32 or if its because its 16MB capacity, but im sure AR Max isnt the only USB device that might not allow anything but FAT to format it.
PS2 Consoles:
SCPH-30001 [V4] - unmodded (2)
SCPH-30001-R [V5] DMS4 Pro SE
SCPH-50001-N [V9] CC 2.0 SLE
SCPH-79001 [V16] Silver - unmodded

I suppose it may be a size-dependent limitation, though I can't test that myself. My smallest USB drive is 64MB, and that works fine with FAT32.
