    Hi all,

So I'm trying to install the FMCB noobie package onto a secondary memory card. I'm using my current FMCB installation on my primary memory card and uLaunchELF to run FMCB_INSTALL.ELF, however as soon as I try and run it the screen goes black and nothing happens. I've tried this with three different USB drives on two different PS2 consoles, and no luck on any of them. I have done a FMCB install this way before (using one of the three USB sticks I'm trying to use) however that was on my own PS2 at home. Any ideas why the FMCB installer is hanging? I'm guessing it might be something to do with the USB drivers?

Yepp,... Either your USB-Drives are all incompatible, or you have Filesystem-Problems.

Try to reformat your USB-Device again.
Afaik, the partition must be 'primary' and of course the FS should be FAT32.

Still having no luck. Tried both FAT and FAT32 and uLE reads the device just fine, but FMCB installer hangs when I try to run it. I've done a FMCB install before using this exact same USB device so I don't know what the deal is. Could it be a hardware issue with the PS2 consoles themselves?

    Why ?

You always need to use FAT32 with the PS2.
So all tests you made with FAT16 are completely invalid. (NB: "FAT" == "FAT16")

and uLE reads the device just fine, but FMCB installer hangs when I try to run it.
Does it hang immediately on the attempt to run it, without any screen output at all ?
If so, then I suspect damage to the installer elf itself.

I've done a FMCB install before using this exact same USB device so I don't know what the deal is. Could it be a hardware issue with the PS2 consoles themselves?
Isn't this the same console you used for the earlier install you made ?
If so, then I don't see what would have changed for the new install attempt.
And I never saw any console model dependency with any of my USB drives (a lot).
I'm not saying it can't happen, but all my units work both with slim and fat consoles.

And what about the new MC you are installing to ?
That is after all the MOST critical component in any FMCB install.
So is that a standard Sony MC, or identical to the MC you used for previous installs ?

If that MC is of a type you have not used with FMCB before, then that becomes the prime suspect, since many MC clones exist today which are incapable of running FMCB (invalid or buggy MagicGate implementation).

But normally such problems would not hang the installer before showing any screen responses, so I think you should download the whole package anew and start over.

*shrugs* FAT works fine in uLE and SMS, I didn't think it would make much of a difference. anyway like I said, I've tried FAT32 as well.

Immediately when I try to run it. I've downloaded the noobie package, the 2011 noobie package, and standalone FMCB v1.8 as well. no success with any of them.

nope, it's a different PS2. tried it on two seperate slim ps2's, my FMCB'd memory card boots fine on both of them but installer hangs on both of them.

official sony 8MB, and my FMCB'd MC i'm trying to install from is also official sony 8MB.

It wouldn't be because I have an older version of uLE on my MC would it? Like, it would be incompatible with the latest FMCB installer? That's about the only other thing I can think of.

ha. that's exactly what it was. my version of uLE was too old to run the latest FMCB installer. booted the latest version from mass:// and it let me run the FMCB installer no worries. thanks guys!

Ah, that explains it. But I don't think the problem was an incompatibility with the FMCB installer as such, but rather with the USB drive as accessed on the newer slim PS2 consoles.

There have been lots of changes to uLE's USB mass storage drivers over the years, and the current ones are far superior to many of the older ones.
