Might seem like a stupid question (please no vilification if it is) but would it be possible to have an option on the FMCB menu to install FMCB to another memory card.

Another alternative that crossed my mind is to have HDL boot an image that will achieve an FMCB install.

All brickbats accepted if I am spouting nonsense.

FMCB HAVE an option to choose on which card to be installed. When you start the FMCB 1.8 installation you'll be asked to choose on which card to be installed.

Ones FMCB is installed there are tons of methods to install FMCB again

I give you credit for asking, but what it is ....
It is a matter of (SIZE) you see the FMCB Installer, and the Package are 2.?MB, and once it is installed on a card it takes up 3.?MB of space. Not really leaving much space on a average 8MB card.... DJ
That's if you are just wanting to do installs from your card only, such as I do, because I help with the install service. But for the normal user it's a waste of space.

I hesitate to say that size doesn't matter... But essentially that is what I would like, not only to safeguard my FMCB installation by having a backup secreted away, but also to allow me to pass on FMCB to anyone that wants it quickly and painlessly. I don't intend to use anything on my FMCB card apart from the boot and HDL, so the rest of the space is wasted anyhow, gamesaves are going to a 16 MB card in the other slot.

A simple solution would be to map it to your USB stick and just insert it when you feel the need to do another install. This way you dont waste the space on your MC and it will run just the same.

Now if your thinking by having it on your MC incase something should go wrong with your current install, it wouldnt work if you couldnt run FMCB and needed to re-install it again to fix the current one. But by naming it RESCUE.ELF on a USB stick, it will be the first thing FMCB would boot if it was stil working enough to run anything, since RESCUE.ELF from USB is the VERY FIRST thng it searches for before it even boots up.
    PS2 Consoles:
    SCPH-30001 [V4] - unmodded (2)
    SCPH-30001-R [V5] DMS4 Pro SE
    SCPH-50001-N [V9] CC 2.0 SLE
    SCPH-79001 [V16] Silver - unmodded

I was thinking more of it being as a way of a recipient of the install service on here being able to make an instant backup when they receive their MC and also to allow the easy install of new ones for friends and acquaintances.

Now when you say map it to your USB what exactly do you mean.

he means have the installer on a usb stick, and then set a menu option in the fmcb configurator to look for FREE_MCBOOT.ELF at MASS:/FREE_MCBOOT.ELF

that way when you insert your usb stick, and then turn on your console, fmcb will find the installer on the usb stick and list it as an option in the menu... same thing goes if you choose put the installer on your memcard.

and to answear your other question, it should be completely fine to have the installer on your memcard so its always in the menu.. since you said you dont use that card for game saves anyway, space is not an issue.

if you put the fmcb FREE_MCBOOT.ELF & INSTALL folder on the root of your memcard... you will have 2 blocks of corrupted data on the memcard in the browser screen, this is not a problem at all.. just ignore it.

or you might be able to put it in a sub-folder, like the boot folder.. have not done any tests but it should work. and then you wont have the corrupted data blocks showing up.

if you choose the sub-folder option, it should look something like this..
    mc0:/BOOT/BOOT.ELF
    mc0:/BOOT/ESR.ELF
    mc0:/BOOT/FREE_MCBOOT.ELF
    mc0:/BOOT/INSTALL/APPS/
    mc0:/BOOT/INSTALL/FMCB_CFG/
    mc0:/BOOT/INSTALL/FMCB_CFG/FMCB_CFG.ELF
    mc0:/BOOT/INSTALL/INJECT/
    mc0:/BOOT/INSTALL/INJECT/DVDELF.BIN
    mc0:/BOOT/INSTALL/MODULES/
    mc0:/BOOT/INSTALL/MODULES/USBD.IRX
    mc0:/BOOT/INSTALL/MODULES/USBHDFSD.IRX
    mc0:/BOOT/INSTALL/ESR.ELF
    mc0:/BOOT/INSTALL/BOOT.ELF

Ok now comes the next dumb question, how do I get the installer file onto the memory card, can this be done from the FMCB browser?

to add files to the memcard, you will need to use uLaunchELF

1# put the installer files onto a usb-stick
2# put the usb-stick in your ps2, and run uLaunchELF
3# browse to MASS, select your file and press R1 and then select copy
4# browse to your memcard mc0*1st slot* mc1*2nd slot*, and then choose where you want to put the file, either in root or in a sub-folder... press R1 and then select paste

note: i think you can copy only 1 file or folder at a time, so copy either the ELF or INSTALL folder, then repeat the process to copy the next file.
