I have fmcb booting hdl with old, fat, us ps2. I went to play rez the other day, and noticed all or most of the text in the game is japanese, not english! If I load hdl with exploit (same ps2 and drive) then launch rez, it's fine and in english.(even if I put in the mc with fmcb and saved rez file from before and launch it). What could possibly cause this? Are there other anomalies with fmcd and hdl? Can anyone confirm that this happens with newer versions (as I am running very old version 1.1b of fmcb). I've tried to upgrade to newer fmcd, wouldn't work for my applications, old one works fine as I only want it to boot hdl on any fat ps2 without disk.

If you only want to boot directly to HDL, without the OSD-Hack and FMCB 1.6-Features, I suggest you to use FMCB 1.5 with 75KB-DVDELF.bin.

This can do what you want, it don't waste so much space than FMCB 1.1, it is a bit more flexible (you can also hold a button, to start an app), it is configure-able, the problem shouldn't occur anymore and you have embedded USB-Drivers, to load your apps from stick.
If you don't delete the osdmain.elf, FMCB 1.5 is very "ROCK SOLID".
It also has the RESCUE.ELF for the first time and since FMCB 1.5 still have embedded USB-Drivers, it is nearly impossible to make it useless.

I've tired 1.5 before, always got black screen of death when any games were launched with hdl...I will try it again. What is the 75kb-dvdelf.bin? Is it something seperate from the 1.5 or also needed with it, or included in it? Also, will 1.5 work for various versions of fat ps2, and can you do a multi-version install without losing all your saved game data on that card, or does it wipe it out? Thank you for the suggestions and answers.

That sounds familiar to me. I had this problem with memento. The first day i learned that there is FMCB i installed it and since then such languages problems never occured again. i started with FMCB 1.4. So everything higher than 1.4 of FMCB works great without language problems and works with hdl. My games are starting with the language configured in the system settings of the ps2. Silent Hill 2 started always in japanese befor i switched to FMCB.

Please do, as that would probably fix a lot of your problems. As for HDL I have no problems at all using it. And I have used it with the official releases of both FMCB v1.5 and FMCB v1.6, and am currently using beta test release 51 of FMCB v1.6b, still without any problems.

    What is the 75kb-dvdelf.bin?
We are not fully able to encrypt a file from scratch to the format needed to make the PS2 launch it in the way used for FMCB. But we are able to put new code inside a file that is already encrypted that way. And the file we use for that purpose is the PS2 DVD player. In the old fat PS2 consoles the encrypted file contains the entire player software, making it very large, between 1.3 and 1.7 MB. But in the new slim PStwo consoles the encrypted file is more like a bootstrap loader for the real player, making it very small, at appx 75KB.

Using this small file to inject the FMCB code will significantly reduce the overall size of the installation, frequently releasing appx 1.5 MB for normal memory card gamesave use, as compared to using the huge file of the fat PS2. And the small file will work equally well on both old and new consoles.

But we can't distribute any DVDELF.BIN file with FMCB, since that would be illegal, so you will have to get it elsewhere, and add it to your FMCB installation package yourself. (Except if you want the version in the console, as the installer can extract that one for you.)

Also, will 1.5 work for various versions of fat ps2, and can you do a multi-version install without losing all your saved game data on that card, or does it wipe it out?
A multi-install should not harm any existing data on the card, but if you already have an old multi-install on the card, then it needs to be reverted to a normal install before making the new multi-install. The FMCB installer has a command for doing that, but I'm not sure if that handles the very oldest FMCB versions too. I guess only jimmikaelkael can answer that question.

My advice to you is that if all your current memcards are full, then you should back some of those gamesaves up to other media (USB/HDD) using psuPaste, so you can make room on at least one card for a completely new install where you start by reformatting that card. This way you would be sure of having something fully compatible both with current and future versions (assuming you install FMCB v1.5 or v1.6). Alternatively you should consider buying a new memory card to use that way.

    Best regards: dlanor

Thank you very much for the very informative answers to my questions. Just a few more before I proceed...when I get the dvdelf.bin, I add it to the files I want the fmcb installer to install to my card? Along with hdl I assume? If I have hdl as the rescue booting from usb, do I need this dvdelf.bin on the mc or the usb, or not at all? Thank you much.
