FMCB + Component Video

(I know, this might have been asked several times before, but searching the forums gives me a "missing security token" error)

I've used FMCB for a few weeks on my SCPH-30004 and everything went fine. Today I got a component video cable and when I use it, FMCB freezes at the logo screen. Using the old AV cable for the FMCB menu and than changing to the component video cable works, but that's no real solution for me.

Is there any (planned) patch that will fix this bug?

P.S.: component video output is set to Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr, because my Supera Color HD video converter box doesn't support RGB.

i use a component cable with FMCB 1.8b and have not had a problem. mine is also set to Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr. the only difference i can see is that i am hooked directly into a fullHD LCD tv. maybe its your HD video converter box thats giving the problems. any chance of a direct component hookup to the tv? if it still falters then its not the converter box and may be the PS?

Well, the converter box doesn't send anything back to the PS2, it just receives the component video signal from the PS2 and outputs a VGA signal to my PC monitor. So why should it cause FMCB to freeze?

Edit:
I just booted my PS2 with Final Fantasy X in the drive and it started after the FMCB logo. So I guess it isn't the logo that freezes, but the menu that comes after.

Come on guys, nobody here who can reproduce this problem?

I cannot reproduce your issue, i have component cables connected to my HDTV and also use a TV Tuner Card in the PC so i can use the monitor (for screen captures) and have never had an issue of a freeze. Perhaps some info on the converter box, cable brand, etc could help. Maybe someone has had issues with something your using and could shed some light.

My guess is your display may freeze, but the program and menu are working ok. It may be the converter, the connections or software issue in the conversion of the signals.

Try disconnecting the component cable when it freezes and plug it into your TV direct (if you can) and see if the display works. Or press a button on console start (like R1 for uLaunchELF) and see if the program boots and displays ok.


It maybe that FMCB just doesnt work in VGA mode, im not sure of that part, but you might find some info by reading thru this thread on the VGA project by doctorxyz:

Most of this "converters" to VGA have problems with interlaced signals, VGA doesn't support interlaced signals, only progressive.

The PS2 output a 480i signal 15Khz horizontal plus 60/50Hz vertical, what this "converters" do is to upscan the horizontal from 15Khz to 31.5Khz (640x480), without handling the interlaced 480i signal.

When you connect this to a VGA you will end up with a black/blue screen or a very distorted image.

A well designed circuit must buffer this interlaced lines and deinterlace it.

I'm using component cables with FMCB 1.8b and have no problem to report yet. My connection is component to receiver to HDMI out to TV.

It is clearly like JNABK guessed yesterday:

There is probably no real freeze-up of either FMCB or any other part of DFYX's PS2.

It is just the other equipment processing the video signal that makes it appear so, by freezing the display whenever the PS2 outputs a signal that equipment can't accept, due to timing format or interlace or whatever.

And that is why no one else here can reproduce the problem, because we simply don't have the same hardware.

Okay, it's getting weird. I tried some stuff like pressing the hotkeys for HDLoader and everything worked. Then I rebooted without pressing any buttons because I wanted to test if restarting my converter works and well... everything worked without restarting it. I have absolutely no idea why it works now and why it didn't last week. Scary...

But at least it works. Thanks for all those tips, guys.
