I'm using a Katana multi-partition memory card, and I have FMCB with ESR on the first partition, but my saves are split up alphabetically. When is it safe to switch the memory card out? After the ESR screen pops up? Once the status color messages start popping up?

I pull my mc once the game loads and is at a start screen or an options screen.
That way there is no data loading or when it asks for a memory card.

I have never had problems this way.

I'd do that, but there are several games I've been playing that autoload data as soon as the game boots up. Like, the first screen you see is the "Loading data from..." screen.

Yes I have a few of those games. But you will get corrupt data if you try to pull the card at that time.
I usually try to use a mc that I want in the PS2 for those games, so then I don't need to switch.

Well, ESR doesn't use memory card in any way, so it's absolutely safe to pull out the memory card at any moment you would normally do.

The best (safest) moment is between ESR launch (splash screen displayed) and application doing IOP reset (flashing colors). This way you may be almost sure, that there was no memory card usage (but this applies only to games, homebrew apps are a different story).

I do not belive it common to lose a gamesave due to the card being pulled out when its being read is it? I could be wrong I supose but I do not think so. Am I?

Now being written to is a differint story of course. I do not know of any game that creates a gamesave first thing without asking if its ok first and I also dont know of any that wright to an exsisting gamesave first thing ether.

Although its always important to know when to pull out and have the self controll to actually do it......

well i dunno, but the tekken save didn't work anymore... when i load up tekken it told me that the file is corrupt, it asked me to format it or i should delete it per the save browser... well if its like usb sticks then data easy gets lost if you pull the device off when it reads/writes

I have another n00b question, if I have a 8mb Sony Memory Card with FMCB and ERS on it can I also use it to save games, or do I have to do this swap method you guys are talking about and put in a new memory card? Thanks for any help, I'm new at this stuff.

Yes you can use your mc that has fmcb and ERS on it to save games.

You don't need to swap your memory card. That is pure choice or because of space perhaps.
