Clarifications on FCMB + HDLoader + Backups
Clarifications on FCMB + HDLoader + Backups –
Hello there, I've been researching PS2 modding for the past few days considering modchips, modified memory cards, swap-discs, and the whole range of methods used in getting a PlayStation 2 to play backups. I've decided to ask some questions in this forum since it appears to be a nice community with knowledgeable members.
My aim is to have a PS2 with a hard drive attached (through the network adapter), and to have the ability to play backup games off of discs as well as save backups to the attached hard drive (If I need to ftp them in via HDLoader Server that is acceptable as well). I'm hoping to do this by modifying my memory card with an Action Replay Max to install FMCB, having HDloader installed onto the memory card, and running HDloader through the modified memory card enabling me to play games off of the hard drive. For playing backups, discs will be patched with ESR. If I've gotten any of this wrong please correct me.
My confusion lays in HDloader, in some cases I see it as a legitimate disc and hard drive solution costing $50, only able to save official pressed discs to the attached hard drive, and in other cases I see it integrated freely into the memory card with FMCB which is able to play backup discs. I've read that HDLoader can be patched to ignore checking the authenticity of a disc, and this has to be done with the use a modchip (is that correct? I thought FCMB enables playing backups). Is it possible to play a backup disc with FCMB and no mod-chip installed, and save that same backup to the hard drive for later use via HDloader?
Thanks for reading my post and having such a wealth of information on your forums.

yes you have got everything right. And Hdloader is a free software you don't need to pay for it, just grab it from www.sksapps.com You can check the tutorials section in there
Now for installing fmcb tutorials just go here http://bootleg.sksapps.com/
and check the tutorials section. it has lots of them.
And if you are looking to buy HDloader or aka HDAdvance it is only a rip off version of hdloader and it is not better than hdloader. The latest version of HDloader is 0.8c and it is better than the retail version of it.
What I would tell you to do would be install the nooby package of fmcb it will have all of the softwares to just get you started. after installing them you are ready to go. You can install games to the HD through winhiip in windows or by ftp. And you don't need the disc to be present in the ps2 to play games through hdloader.
Now just check the tutorials sections in the above mentioned places you will get all of your questions answered
No. The ESR Patched game will not run on HDLoader that I'm aware of. FMCB will usually include HDLoader and ESR, so you don't have to worry about either. If you already have your HDD in your console, you'll be able to back up most of your games. ESR is a solution if you don't have your HDD yet since it helps an unmodded PS2 read the game.

Not all games will work under HDLoader, so ESR works as an alternate method for those too... If a game doesn't work in HDLoader, patch it for ESR and burn a copy to use.

So far as I know, you can't FTP a game over... I usually use HDLoader Server and HDLDumb/HDLDumx to transfer games over the network.

OK, man to get you going,:
Use the Link in my signature to use Action Replay to install the FMCB, (NOOBIE PACKAGE) to your MC. This package has all the needed files to get you started.
Once you have that installed on your MC, you then can use a program called (IMGBurn) to rip your game to your PC as a .ISO.
You can then hook your EIDE HDD to your PC by any means you have,
(internal ribbon, External USB 2.0 HDD case) and then format it with (WINHIIP).
And then you may transfer your game .ISO over to your EIDE HDD, with a program called (WINHIIP) it is the best and fastest way to transfer your games to PS2 HDD.
And now if you had a clean error free rip of your game, when you start up your PS2 with your MC with the (NOOBIE PACKAGE) in slot0 or slot1, you will then be able to use HDLoader to load your games from the HDD. As stated not all games are compatible, but 90% are.
As for the one that aren't then you must rip the game as before with IMGBurn, and then patch the game .ISO with ESR Disk Patcher, and then burn it with IMGBurn. Pop it in your PS2 and then the screen should flash several colors and then your back up should load up.
And finally yes you are able to play a ESR backed up game, through HDLoader, I have several games that work. But the same ESR PATCHER, also removes the PATCH. So either way you are able to use your ripped .ISO..
If you have anymore questions, feel free to ask, there are several of us that's been around this from the beginning. And have the ability to help out.
Thank you very much, you have all been very helpful and replied quickly with excellent answers. You have solved all of my confusion.
Today I purchased a SCPH-35001 PS2 which should be an ideal candidate for installing FCMB on the memory card and purchasing a network adapter and hard drive.
I called up every Gamestop, BRE Software, Trade & Play, Best Buy, and Blockbuster in my town to try to find a copy of an Action Replay Evo Max to edit my memory card to no avail. Most places hadn't heard of one (considering its an uncommon product for a barely supported system [by most stores]) and the only places I can consider purchasing from are on the internet. However most online stores with reasonable prices are out of stock, and the only places in stock charge $40-50. Even eBay doesn't have any Evo editions.
I'm aware of FCMB's service with members offering to modify memory cards for free, but I am concerned that I will later need to modify/create more memory cards (for friends), and if another person sets up my card I will be unable to add any new programs I might find. Does anyone know of a method to acquire an Action Replay Evo Max? I'm unsure which edition I need, apparently there is a USB version and a custom memory card version.
For using a regular Max the link to installing FCMB with the independence exploit @ http://home.comcast.net/~jnabk3/ is dead. I'm also aware I can use a Pelican Codebreaker 8.1+ however all the discs for that are also above $50. What can I do?
That last conclusion is incorrect.

And when you want to install FMCB for friends later on you will simply boot uLE from your own MC and use the uLE FileBrowser to start the FMCB installer from a USB drive also holding the FMCB INSTALL/ folder, to which you may have added whatever programs you want your friends to have. And if you keep the installer package on a USB drive you can easily use a PC to perform all package modifications you want.
In order to do all this you naturally need to learn a little about how FMCB and its installer works, but you do not need ARMax or any other such tools as described in the FMCB install tutorials. Such tools and the methods they're used with are only intendeded to allow people with an unmodded console to start the FMCB installer. But once you have FMCB working those methods will never be needed again. Effectively your console, or any console (of the same region) that you insert that MC into, will then work as a modded console.
Honestly, you are better off using the install services.

Like I already said, there is no need for you to waste money on a single-use tool.

Once you have FMCB on one MC, and then proceed to make another yourself (as backup), then you are set for life and for helping out your friends with this stuff too.
Best regards: dlanor
Wow, thanks a bunch dlanor, I'll send my memory card to one of the persons nice enough to install FCMB for me and I'll be on my way to having my PS2 to being a dream machine.
greetings, im sebastian from argentina, ive been reading through threads to see if i could find an answer to my doubts before posting. i want to do exactly the same as this guy but with two extra complications.
1) my lens is dead
2) i have an old magic 3 chip (my dead ps2 has been lying on a shelf for a couple of years)
im intending to bring my ps2 back to life as cheaply as possible. i have all the things needed except the fmcb.
my questions are:
a) im almost sure that i cant do a usb install with this modchip, can i?
in the case i cant, i might be able to get a ps2 slim with matrix infinity (again, busted lens) from a friend and try to do a usb install. worst case scenario ill send a mc to the guy who offers to install them in argentina.
b) so, once i get a fmcb; do i have to disble my old magic 3 modchip? does anyone knows of any incompatibility of fmcb with it?
unlike the original creator of this thread, y will only use hdloader, no dvd backups are going to be played in my ps2.
thanxs a lot for your help
