I found this portuguese site with ready-made packages for installing FMCB 1.8b. They have a package for booting the installer from a USB stick using HD Advance, but I can't find any other site with information about HD Advance being able to boot elfs from a USB stick. When examining the package it seems like it would be booting X:\HDADVANCE\HDADVANCE.ELF.

I can get HD Advance 3.0 for cheap locally so it would be great if someone could confirm this working I have a 77004 if that makes any difference.

Your version, doesn´t even have the support to attach an HD.
How do you want to make HDA run?
USB-Advance is a choice for ya, but I rather suggest you trying to create a swap-card and a custom-swap-disc, or send your MC to one of the volunteers.

I'm well aware that I can't attach an HD to my 77004 I want to use HD Advance (pressed retail discs) to boot the installer from a USB memory just like in this guide for Swap Magic:

    http://bootleg.sksapps.com/tutorials..._swapmagic.htm

But with \HDADVANCE\HDADVANCE.ELF as folder structure instead of \SWAPMAGIC\SWAPMAGIC.ELF, as that portuguese site that I linked to in the OP is suggesting. But I can't find any other site confirming that HD Advance can do that.

I hope someone can make sense of what I'm trying to say, english is not my first language

just drop ulaunchelf iso to your hard drive. and start ulaunchelf via hd advance. then you can do whatever you need.

that's how i got started with homebrew on ps2 - i bought unmodded one with hd advance, and that was the only way i had to get started.

You cant use HD Advance with your slim version, plain and simple. You also cant use the PS1 Exploit with a slim, so that option is out too.

That wont work .....HD Advance is HD Loader and it only boots games/homebrew installed on an internal HDD. SwapMagic is designed to boot backup discs and run homebrew apps from a USB device (3.6 - 3.8coder versions), so you cant use the same instructions. That site is incorrect, thats why you cant find other sites saying the same thing.

The Guides and Tutorials posted in the Official Free McBoot site are verified to work, so those are the ones you should be following.

That's what i feared when I couldn't find any other site mentioning it. Reading the tutorials i seems like my system can't use Swap Magic either

"Note: Not all USB Thumb drives/hard drives/storage devices are compatible with the listed software. Also, on SCPH-7500x and newer, Sony has made changes to the USB hardware/software which can cause inoperability of the listed software with the majority if not all of USB storage devices."

Doing a bit of research I found alot of people have had problems with SCPH-77004 and Swap Magic 3.6/3.8 not being able to boot ELFs from USB devices, so I guess I'm out of luck using Swap Magic unless I want to try fiddle around with "magic keys" etc?

Well, dont count out SwapMagic so quickly, its very possible to find a compatible USB device. Thats a general message for people to understand that they may find out their USB devices dont work. There are hundreds of USB devices available to use, from flash sticks to hard drives, even an iPod or PSP is useful as a USB device.

If you have access to borrow other types of USB devices, its worth the try. Or you can just contact someone near you to install it for you from this thread:
