I was wondering if I could install FMCB with the Game Swap Trick without a usb hard drive/stick because the one i have doesn't work anymore.
If I can, i'd like a tutorial for it because I am VERRY new to this.
Do I have to just put the "INSTALL" folder in the Newbie package onto the Game that i'm swapping?
EDIT: I have a "fat" PS2.
For example
1. Make ISO of MGS3:Snake Eater with imgburn
2. Download Ulaunch.elf(I think it is named uncompressed BOOT.ELF), rename it to NETDOWN.ELF
3. Use apache, change the TOC for NETDOWN.ELF on the MGS3 iso to 915196 or how many bytes, etc.
4. Update NETDOWN.ELF in the mgs3 iso with the renamed NETDOWN.ELF
5. put the files from free_mc_boot_1.8b.rar (INSTALL folder, freemcboot.elf, etc) into the iso with a program
6. boot legit copy of mgs3 until you get to the main menu, press start
7. swap when it's at the main menu, go to camouflage download

DONT think that would work(then again im no too sure), but you can use pretty much any type of flash drive, even mp4s, ipods and celphones work.

There are some distinct problems with this method.
One is the obvious risk that inserting the extra content may make the game unable to find the correct file at swap-time, in which case uLaunchELF will never start up.
The other risk is that the IOP reset and driver reload of uLaunchELF may enforce another disc validation, in which case the burned disc will not be accessible in the FileBrowser. If that should happen you may need to use a config file (for CD case renamed to "LNCHELF.CNF") which inhibits the IOP reset at startup of uLE, but then there is a risk of incompatibility with the modules already loaded by the game.
Still, the only way to find out for sure what works or not is by trying it for real.

I'm burning the disc right now using IMGburn. If this works, this would make things a HELL of a lot easier for us cheap people.
I'm sorry to say it, but it did not work. I will continue to try with other games, but I believe the only way is with a USB stick.

Well, if you do not have a USB device available to use, you can place Cogswap.elf instead of the uLaunchELF.elf in your ps2 game swap backup. Be sure to use its filesize instead of uLe's. ;)
then once the Cogswap app is running you can use it to insert a CD burned with the FMCB installer and INSTALL folder.
You will need to place a real PS2 game disc in once Cogswap is running, then press the O button so it will read the disc and authenticate it as a real PS2 disc. When the screen says "cogswap", thats when you swap in the backup FMCB install disc, then press X to run it.
You can find the tutorial to burn the FMCB installer in the Official guides site for FMCB in the Installations Tab.
PS: no, you cant add the FMCB installer and INSTALL folder to the PS2 swap backup, you can only replace a single ELF in there to boot it instead of the intended game ELF file.
All this sounds like to much damn work.... Not saying it's impossible to do, but i think ANYONE can afford $1-$3, for one of use here to do the install for you.
And it sure would cut down on all the Rif Raf., I like the idea of people fixing problems themselves, but need to draw the line and just give in and have it done by a professional.

I tried the Cogswap on it, and it's giving me the red mist screen (Insert a Playstation 2 Disc)
What's going on?
If it helps, I have a SCPH-39001 model PS2.
