If you are using diskless HDL, You should patch your HDL elf properly <period>

Regardless of PS2 model, if you are not using discs to boot it, don't patch it with the damned disc stof option as it only gives problems.

I don't know how to be any clearer. I've never patched an HDL and I've been using this version, diskless, for over a year.

I simply copied it to my friend's MC, so I don't understand why I would need to patch it?

Its possible your friends PS2 and yours dont have the same Mobo/Bios. I have 2 V4 NTSC console and the mobos are not the same.

Or your NA is a different version, has some issue with the connection, etc.
    PS2 Consoles:
    SCPH-30001 [V4] - unmodded (2)
    SCPH-30001-R [V5] DMS4 Pro SE
    SCPH-50001-N [V9] CC 2.0 SLE
    SCPH-79001 [V16] Silver - unmodded
