I was helping a friend install ULE(4.16) FMCB(1.3b) and HDLoader on his PS2 (v4 & 16mb Max memory card), and we're having a really strange issue with HDLoader.

When you run the elf (I have 2 versions 8c and an unidentified version) it just goes to a black screen.

What's weird is I successfully ran it once, played King of Fighters 2006, changed the language to Japanese, and saved. When I restarted the PS2 to try another game and relaunched HDL, BSOD.

What's really weird, even when I try it with my memory card on his PS2, it does the same thing.....so it must be something on the actual HDD that's stopping it from booting up. I CAN browse the HDD contents with ULE.

As a bit of background, this HDD came out of my PS2 (v4 also...I'm giving him my old 40g drive) and I preinstalled the games on my ps2 before I put it into his PS2 (our game collections are remarkably similar).

Does anybody know what could have caused this or how to fix?? It's frustrating because I spent maybe 5 hours installing those games for him.

i know the ports on the ps2 were the net adapter connect do go bad
i had a bad one on my v5 (i think thats right)
but it was just causing the hdd to not be detected, maybe yours is broke differently or maybe just a bad connection?
id try the same setup in your ps2 one more time, to make sure it still works.
maybe swap net adapters and try again.
just to try to narrow down the problem.

I did state that I can browse the HDD through ULE, so it is being detected, but thanks for trying.

try booting with disc in the drive, if this helps make sure that you patch hdloader manually with settings you need.
if that doesn't work, try "repair" option in winhiip.

Thanks for replying. I just heard from my friend and it works when he has a disc in the drive. What does that suggest?

Should disc control be on or off? I leave it on usually.

What's odd is everything that's on his memory card (exploit wise) came from my memory card, and I don't have any of these problems. It's the same compilation of HDLoader I'm using, with the same settings.

    Any suggestions?

create a new patched HDLoader without using the following switches:
/S - Stop cdvd-drive motor after loading (use ONLY with disc based booting).
maybe you also need this switch:
/N - No disc seek while loading (stops freezing at splash screen on V9).
EDIT: note, the /S switch has different effects on different PS2 console versions. an /S patched HDL works fine on my V4 without a disc in the drive, but it does not on my buddies V9.

64MB chinese clone MC, Free MC Boot 1.8, Independence Exploit (backup mod) (Slot 2)

But why does it work fine on my PS2, which is the same version? I've never compiled anything before, so I'm stumped as to how HDLoader's functions changed by themselves.

V9 are a real pain in the ***, very picky, and require some specific patches, dunno which ones...
