Alternatives to an 8C ps2 slim?
Alternatives to an 8C ps2 slim? –

I followed some guides here to successfully install free mcboot onto my slim ps2 so homebrew on it is all well. However my friends ps2 slim is an 8C model made after march 2008 and it's listed that free mcboot is out for that. Could someone point me in the right direction as to how I can go about getting ulaunchelf to boot on his ps2 using a prehacked memory card? I have been searching for a while now and I'm a bit lost on how to do this. Simply plugging my memory card into his ps2 does nothing (even though the free mcboot files show up in the ps2 browser).

I guess your best bet is using a modchip with DEV-olution mode which can boot UlauncElf straight from the MC.
if the modchip doesn't have DEV mode then you must boot everything from the CD/DVD.

setting up a memory card to boot ulaunchelf on it's own isn't possible on an 8C ps2? i'm sorry if i'm asking stupid questions, just looking to clarify before i head out to gather soldering materials and such.

WAIT!!!!
lol......
ok now i have your attention, there is a slim chance( no pun intended) that FMCB may work with an 8c . some of the early ones still had the older bios so check first.
IF it doesnt work then the best way is to get a swap magic disk and use that to boot into ULe. from ULe you can start ESR,SMS OPL homebrew etc..... if you need to know how ask and i can show you it is very simple, or search my name as i have posted many times on how to do this.
cheaper than a chip and no soldering required.....

if you don't mind could you tell me how i can check to see if it works or not? to put it into perspective i used the 007 agent under fire swap trick on my ps2 to get ulaunchelf to boot and free mcboot is fully installed. what i thought was that I could just copy the files to my friends memory card like the volunteers here do for people and voila, however just plugging in my hacked memory card doesn't yield any results.
i am very cautious about this because i recently fully bricked a ta-v88 psp slim by trying to update to cfw 6.60, and i mean BRICKED because the pandora battery wouldn't even work on it. so i am asking to be 100% sure before i mess around with these newer problematic models.
If all else fails, I guess I can simply resort to swap magic as you suggested. However do I have to use that to boot ulaunchelf every time? What seems like light years ago I bought a copy of AR Max EVO and used the Independence exploit on my fat ps2 and played my backups with hdloader and a internal hard drive and that worked wonderfully. However it appears these things are extremely outdated today...

you can not just copy the files to your friends card it has to be installed this is why there is an install service.

you cant brick a PS2 as you are not trying to write new firmware to the board. you are using an update feature of the bios to look for an update on the MC which just happens to be redirected to suit our requirements by some very clever people.

ok, i suggested uLE as it is versitile in enabeling you to start any homebrew or emulator or HDLoader or OPL...... you can just start the desired homebrew directly of course but you would lose the ability of choice...
OPL has more compatability than HDLoader but i still keep it around for the odd game that OPL wont run. OPL's advantage over HDLoader is the ability to play games off an USB HDD/stick or from a network share on your computer or you could use PS2ESDL to run games from a NAS
hope this helps
