[Tutorial] Free OSDatel Installation
Revision 1.1 (Based on BETA version 1.0 package and done using an exploited fat ps2) This is a rough draft and will be revised as I can get a chance!
WARNING! THIS WILL ERASE THE ENTIRE CONTENTS OF YOUR MEMORY CARD! BE SURE TO MAKE A BACK UP OF ALL YOUR SAVES ON IT BEFORE STARTING!
Requirements:
* Just about any version PS2
* A way to boot homebrew software. (a buddy's modded, exploited, ps2, or swap magic or some way that will allow temporary booting of homebrew.)
* A computer running Windows 2000, or XP (Not sure about vista since I haven't seen any reports of use with it.)Code:Free OSDatel install package 1.0 BETA- Download or Free OSDatel install package 1.1 BETA - Download part 1 Free OSDatel install package 1.1 BETA - Download part 2
* A USB Thumb drive or USB HDD that will work with most PS2 homebrew (including uLaunchELF, HDD_EMU, etc.)
Known Install Issues:
As per this post (Free Vast Continues), l_oliveira has reported that the cloned Chinese memory cards fail to produce the required mcid.bin.
Example:
Process:
Go ahead and download and uncompress the package if you haven't already.
On to business. Now, go ahead and place a few specific files on your USB drive from the package. They can be in the root, a folder, whatever.
Files include:
* MCID_NTSC.ELF or MCID_PAL.ELF (depending on your region)
* HDProject--McFlasher.elf
Now, go ahead and plug it in to your ps2 and boot up the system with whatever means you have to get homebrew running at this point with the memory card you want to flash inserted into the first slot. Launch the region appropriate MCID_****.ELF and you'll see the following screens. Also the most common destination to dump your mcid.bin is usually on your USB Stick/HDD.
Now you've completed the first step. Lets continue on. The second step is to patch an image for your memory card.
NOTE: I've decompressed the package to my desktop on my computer. So, depending on where you decompress it to, you're links will be different. My path will be C:\Documents and Settings\Bootleg\Desktop\Free OsDatel Boot MC V1.0 BETA (PAL NTSC_U)
All computer paths will be colored blue and have that location before it even though it won't be mentioned. I really don't want to keep typing that path over and over.
Back to patching. Copy your mcid.bin from your USB Stick/HDD to the folder \Free OsDatel Boot MC - ID Patch\
What needs to be done now is dependent on the memory card you decided to get the ID from.
Now open the batch file
Now choose the appropriate region and MC size. Official Sony 8MB cards will be obvious as well as the various sized Datel cards. Shown will be a USA 8MB Sony card being patched.
Now that is done. Just copy the output image file from that folder on to your USB Stick/HDD. The output file will have a .ps2 file extension.
Also be sure to copy the BOOT-FREE-OSD folder to the root of your USB Stick/HDD only if you are using 1.0 BETA. The folder is not required on your USB device if you are using 1.1 BETA.
Plug the USB Stick/HDD back into your ps2 and this time boot up the MC Flasher
NOTE: ECC Read MUST BE OFF! Also, the "DATEL never formatted" option must be set to no.
The only thing you really need to do is select your image file that you created from your USB Stick/HDD and flash it. here's the examples:
Now your card should be flashed. reboot your PS2 with the card in either slot, USB stick plugged in, and no disc in the drive.
If it boots to uLaunchELF, you've successfully done it. if not, use Action replay Max Evo to reformat the card, and try the process again.
Images provided by JNABK. Many thanks bro! You just saved me a hell of a lot of typing by doing that.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, with that said, some things I will not be adding to this tutorial:
* Requests on replacing the embedded uLE with ANY other ELF files.
* Requests on the strange and unusual. (pretty much a blanket statement)
This tutorial is meant to install the hack to the memory card. it is not meant for anything else. It's not a release thread, bug report thread, request thread, or anything else other than install issues.
