WD NAS for use with the PS2
WD NAS for use with the PS2 –
04-21-2012,06:34 PM
I'm thinking about buying a WD MyBook 2TB NAS for use it with PS2 (OPL, SMS and uLaunch), since I read that the compatibility with this device was improved in OPLv0.8.
But, before buying it, I would like to ask some questions in order to make sure it's a good deal.
Is it easy to configure the NAS in order for it to work properly with the SMB protocol?
Has anybody used a WD NAS with the OPL? Does it really work?
Does SMS and uLaunch work with NAS too?
Does 2TB drives suffer the same problem in relation to PS2 via network, as is the case with USB devices?
Thanks in advance for any help.

I don't know anything about these devices, but i think these are a waste of money in my opinion, they serve the same function as a samba share enabled PC and they cost at least 3 times more as a regular HDD. Yes, i do know they are more convenient than any network because you don't need a PC powered on at all times and you can have the nas practically in top of the console eliminating any cables lying around... but still, you make sure it WILL work, not only with OPL but with all other SMB enabled homebrew.

The problem isn't the HDD itself, is the network connection that make some games stutter because of the speed data is transfered, it is slower than data streamed from optical media on the console. Be aware, it's much less buggy than USB, but some games WILL give you a hard time being played (or at least enjoyed).

Every little home/media server (atom or bigger) will give more pleasure than an nas.
With this kind of server you have many services (included your needed performance smb protocol) and the possibility for more hdd space than the nas.
Rgds.
