VMC compatibility list (unofficial WIP) as of rev. 434.crazyc
VMC compatibility list (unofficial WIP) as of rev. 434.crazyc –
08-02-2010,05:01 PM
This is just a list of games that I have been going through testing with VMC in MC slot 1 (as no game that I know of personally requires a MC in slot 2, but plenty require a MC in slot 1). This is in no way definitive and is liable to change based on changes made to the VMC module, so please don't go complaining to the devs saying "Well it says here that game_x work, but I can't get it working!!" I am just putting this together as a way to keep up with my own progress on finding the current VMC compatibility of the games I own.
If others want to add to it, then by all means do so, but as a favor to the people actually working on the code lets stick to a useful format for reports. I was thinking about doing it in the following fashion, but if Crazyc, Dlanor, or anyone else doing the heavy lifting wants to suggest a better method I say by all means, go with that. But for now I recommend the following.
At the beginning of the post, list what revision you are using (Crazyc branch rev. 434 for example), what version PS2 you test on (V14 or 75001 in my case) in case it is useful information, what loader method (HDD, USB, or SMB), and then list a game by title and game id, and then according to the following tree of possible states. Add any other info after the state.
No detect: Game sees only an empty slot
Detects: if the game sees there is a MC in the slot but you can't do anything else, or if it see it but can't save to or load from, but you can see "extras" type data off it.
Saves: if it will allow you to save to it, but not to load from it.
Saves (corrupts): if it allows you to save to it, but transferring that savegame to a physical memory card and trying to load from it shows a corrupted savegame
Loads: if it allows you to load a savegame from it, but not to save to it.
Works: if everything works properly.
So an example would be:
Crazyc rev.434 SMB V14
God of War SCUS_973.99 Works
Final Fantasy XII IZJS SLPM_667.50 No detect
Mana Khemia SLUS_217.35 Detects (can see extras on savegame, saving with physical MC in slot 1 causes crash and physical MC corruption)
Hopefully this information will be useful.
Edit for helpful tips:
When testing VMC, as discussed below the best way to go about it is to leave the first MC slot empty and to test using the first VMC slot. This is for two reasons;
1: as stated, many games require (and will only save to) the first MC slot. You can usually tell these games as they tend to have an autosave feature or don't give you a choice of slot when asking to save.
2: by leaving the PMC slot empty, there is no chance of spillover when trying to save to the VMC. This eliminates both false positives (thinking it successfully detected/saved when it actually detected/saved to the PMC), and keeps from MC coruption if things go wrong. Remember, these are pre-open beta builds, so things going boom can and do occasionally happen.
Edit by crazyc:
Games reported as not working but fixed:
Ar Tonelico: Melody of Elemia
Atelier Iris: Grand Phantasm
Mana Khemia
Mana Khemia 2
Games reported as not working:
Shining Force EXA
Resident Evil 4
Metal Gear Solid 3:Subsistence

I would suggest not putting a real memory card in the slot with a configured VMC for this reason. Unless you don't care about the contents of that card.
Final Fantasy XII IZJS SLPM_667.50 - No detect
This is strange becuase FF12 US saves fine. I'd like to see debug info for that so I've attached a debug enabled binary that I know works on my console. If it doesn't work on yours, you'll know it's not your fault that yours don't work.
Edit: removed so it doesn't get confused for something people should use normally.

Well after I found that out, I took an extra MC of mine and copied some random savegames on it so I can see if it corrupts it or not. Trust me, after the first time it happened i started booting and keeping all my important stuff on the MC in slot 2, and test in slot 1.

Okay, it's official: It has to be some kind of hardware issue with my specific playstation. I get the exact same crash with yours as I have with mine, hit the start button, black screen, magenta screen and it freezes.
Anyone else out there with a 75001 slim that wants to see if it works with theirs? Because I am officially out of ideas.

That was for just for everyone to know. I don't want newcomers bitching about how it corrupted their memory card.

Yeah I found the problem there, accidentally named the VMC 677.50 instead of 667.50. Working fine now, updated it on my list.
Was referring to the debug OPL binary not working on my machine specifically, when I asked about someone with that model number PS2.
