Truly Random Freezing in 0.9.1 with network loading(I read the Sticky)
Truly Random Freezing in 0.9.1 with network loading(I read the Sticky) –
Hey guys, finally got my swapmagic and tried out the software. It's great, but I just have one issue. I use opl with a 60gb ps3 and am having problems with net loading, it seems to loose its place sometimes when reading the isos on my computer. It's a hit and miss problem, but it's happening consistently now in Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence when I try to rescue Sokolov in the Virtuous Mission. Either the game randomly freezes and stops when fighting the guards or it stops when playing the cutscene afterward. It also sometimes recovers from the freeze and displays a read-skip icon in the upper left corner of the screen, but now it only freezes and stops. I only have tried subsistence, but it's also happened with the other discs.
I took the advice from the sticky concerning this issue, but the same happens. I even turned off autodisconnect and it still happens. Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot? Should I try a different/git version? My firmware version is 4.46 OFW and I have SwapMagic Coder 3.8 with OPL 0.9.1 vanilla loaded from a removable usb.
I also made sure the iso was defragged, this did make the freezes less frequent, but they still occur.
How is your PS3 networked to your PC? If it's over wifi, that won't cut it for sure. If it's wired, I experienced issues with going through the router and not directly to my PS2. I assume this had to do with the router running out of bandwidth and dropping some packets. If the PS3 is not already directly attached to the PC, you should try a direct connection. You may have to get a cross-over cable, or it may work fine with a normal ethernet cable.
Yeah, my ps3 is networked to my PC through ethernet from the primary router/modem to a secondary router in the basement(They're both connected to this one). It's probably not the most optimal setup and the PC and PS3 are right here together in my room, but I'm not sure if I have a crossover cable, plus my PC only has one ethernet port.
Also, the ps3 can't use wifi in ps2 mode(not even sure if the ps2 had wifi), so that's not possible anyway.
The wifi I was referring to was PC->router. The PS2 didn't have wifi as far as I know. You could try using a standard ethernet cable and see if it works. You can tell if it works at all when you start OPL the lights on your PC ethernet port should start lighting up. If you give it a try and it works without freezing, you can get another ethernet card and connect your PC directly to your PS3.
Alright, I happened to have a crossover cable. It loaded the game, but the same thing ended up happening. I wasn't sure if it was a gigabit cable though.
I also got a gigabit ethernet switch with two gigabit CAT5e cables hooked up to only the ps3 and my pc(No Internet), that also loaded the game, but again, it kept freezing.
The problem happens with less frequency now(I've been able to play up to Operation Snake Eater), especially when my broadband isn't hooked up, but it still persists no matter what I do. I'll try some more games to make sure the issue isn't game-specific.
Also just got a connection working with the gigabit cable between the pc and ps3 only, same deal. I'm gonna try to move the SMB share to my secondary hard drive, maybe a miracle will happen.(Nevermind, same thing happens.)

I'm not sure if MGS3: Subsistence has an issue or not...I ended up playing the 3DS version instead of PS2 version (for dual analog and 3D) I had random freezing in other games and using a direct crossover to my PS2 fixed it for the most part...I don't know what else you could try. You would have to start over, but you could also get PS3 versions of MGS3...
Yeah, I pre-ordered the legacy collection, I wanted to try mgs3 now though.
I'll try persona 3 next, maybe this is just some bad luck I've stumbled upon.
Well, I tried Shin Megami Tensei 3(Not Persona 3) NTSC-USA, same stuff is happening. Both through direct and switch setup. It seems to freeze on new scene loads, especially when an FMV plays. Although MGS3 Sub. freezes even when there's no FMV or scenes being loaded.
(This may or may not actually work)
I'm sorry about the constant bumping, but I found the solution. If a mod can sticky this, it would probably help a lot of people.
It may have been simply stupidity on my part, but it seems that if you log into the same user for the share on both the console and PC, the game will load, but read errors will be abound(I'm guessing this has something to do with network resolution)
So, follow this advice if you're on Windows 7 using SMB sharing. Make a separate user account for your ps3/ps2 to access the SMB share, make sure it is not admin and only has read permissions, this seems to solve the issue.

Not worth the sticky...
Plus, if people do that, they're gonna need free space on their MCs because VMCs over SMB REQUIRE read and write permissions.
