PS2 SCPH-70011 NTSC U/C SMB -- need help how to fix problems with games

Hi,

I am looking for some help with my setup:

PS2 System
Model: SCPH-70011 NTSC U/C
Modification: Software
Bootloader: Free McBoot Version 1.8
Secondary Boot: Open PS2 Loader 0.8 VMC
Game Images: stored on computer SMB

Ok, PS2 configured through OPL to access a computer on my network and the computer was setup to share PS2SMB folder for "Guest" user without password. OPL can connect and retrieve list of games, themes and cover arts.

Now about the problem: Some games start and work good but some do not detect game controller and a few do not start at all.

SLUS_208.51 Ace Combat 5 - Unsung War
------------- Game starts and asks to press "Start" button but pressing "Start" button does not produces any effect then game goes into Intro movie
SLUS_213.46 Ace Combat Zero - The Belkan War
------------- Same symptoms as Ace Combat 5
SCUS_973.30 JAK 3
------------- Introduction movie freezes at some point but sound continues and shortly after sound stops. Otherwise if the movie interrupted then I jump into the game.
SLUS_209.63 Final Fantasy XII
------------- Gives a message "DUALSHOCK 2 analog controller is not connected to controller port 1. Please connect DUALSHOCK 2analog controller to controller port 1". The controller is connected and works in other games.
SLUS_203.70 Kingdom Hearts
------------- Gives a message "DUALSHOCK 2 analog controller is not inserted in controller port 1.". The controller is connected and works in other games.
SLUS_219.49 NetFlix
------------- Never finishes load - if my understanding correct Fetflix dropped support for PS2. Can somebody confirm it?

Games which do not start at all

SLUS_206.68 Transformers
------------- Black Screen
SLUS_206.88 Star Ocean [Japaniese] (not dubbed)
------------- Black Screen

I am very new with PS2 and I did some reading in forum as on the internet. I've attempted to use different game "Modes 1-8" but no success so far.

What can be done to remedy this situation? Games are listed on SMB compatibility list but I can not make them work.

Hi,

I confirm for those games, they are working on my PS2 with OPL via SMB without any mode on, I tested them myself. It seems you mainly got controller problem, so do you use an official Sony PS2 controller? The only things I can think of is a controller problem or compatibility with OPL or a hardware problem on your PS2.

I did not test Netflix.

also SLUS-20688 is Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy according to redump.
otherwise Star Ocean: Till the End of Time is SLUS-20488 and is working on my system.

I've just tried 4 controllers (3 Sony SCPH-1200 and 1 SCPH-110) same problem in "Ace Combat 5" no effect on pressing "Start" button.

what I find odd is that if I press "L1+L2+R1+R2+Select+Start" then IGR takes place. What could be wrong?

Do you use VMC (Because I don't, I use Memory Card in Slot 1 and 2 for my game save)? Is it the official 0.8 version, or some later un-official release? (Because I tested those game on the official v0.8 and not on later revision). Also my PS2 is a PAL model but I doubt it is the problem.

I doubt that a not so good rip could be the problem but anyway for Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War (SLUS-20851) the redump MD5 is "8FCC89EAF8A5481BCE65EF713D42A6C1" and my dump got the same MD5.

Star Ocean has an anticheat build in disable mode 6 and it should work

thanks "mode6" did the trick -- game "Star Ocean" started but intro movie has some stattering. Not sure if it is bandwidth related (SMB) or HDD (defragmentation on server).

I just computed MD5 sum for "Ace combat 5" and got 8fcc89eaf8a5481bce65ef713d42a6c1 -- same as you have given in your reply. It looks like image is good.

Something else causing the problem.

Yes, Netflix for PS2 was discontinued from March of this year.
