Programs like WinOnX and Crossover exist to allow you to run windows programs on mac without bootcamp, but they have very limited compatibility and the programs that do work, don't work too well. You can always try to emulate windows on mac with VirtualBox and then try the installers, however I don't know if that will work as well as bootcamp.
I have successfully used my girlfriend's Macbook with VMware Fusion running XP to install games to an external USB FAT32 drive. I've also used the same setup successfully with WinHIIP to access a PS2 APA HDD for game installation. You just have to make sure that you attach the USB device to Windows rather than the Mac (at least with VMware Fusion it gives you the option when you plug in a device).
