Good god, I hope somebody here can help me. I have been trying to set up an SMB share for OPL to run games off of my computer, and have been headbutting the 300 error for like 10 hours now. I am using Win7 x64 pro, FreeMCboot 1.8, and tried both ps2loader 0.8 and 0.9 booting from a flash drive, and my SMB folder is located at F:\PS2SMB, and my firewall is off. I have tried every conceivable troubleshooting step that is even tangentially related to OPL, such as:

    Sharing by Right-click>properties

    Sharing by Right-click>Share with

Sharing manually by setting permissions through Admin Tools>Local Security Policy

Creating a new user on my computer with a password (PS2Share) JUST for the OPL network config to connect
    through

Using a variety of different SMB folder names and permissions combinations

Using different ports to share through, including a random one (451) and a specifically unused one (12)

Forwarding ports to my Computer's static IP for the above ports through both TCP and UDP

Adding exceptions to Windows firewall, rules to windows firewall, specifying to firewall to allow just the PS2Share user to connect with no bullshit

...as well as probably a sizable number of straws grasped at in the form of other benign tweaks that had little to no chance of working. I can ping my PS2 with no packet loss through CMD, but here's the real kicker: Once, and only once, It gave me error 302, which, as you know, is the "invalid share name" error; I changed the share folder to PS2SMB, WHICH IS WHAT I HAVE BEEN TRYING THE MOST FREQUENTLY WITH, AND IT WORKED ONCE FOR 3 MINUTES. I saved my settings, turned off my ps2 to go eat dinner, and come back to Error 300.

It runs 2 different games off of the USB drive itself consistently, so it's not my ps2, It ran a third game across the network with no problems other than some minor audio skipping in the attract mode video, but ran perfectly otherwise, so it's nothing seriously incompatible or anything. I have checked the compatibility list for all 3 and they are fully working. I have gone from to mildly irritated to frustrated to furious to livid to indifferent to apathetic and then back to interested in a loop for the last good while. I want this to work, and when it does work it's amazing. I don't want to give up on such a great idea/program, and want to spread the word to my friends. I can't do this, however, if I can't even get this working for myself.

To summarize, I am stuck with Network Startup Error 300 that's more persistent than if Nemesis was also a terminator, which happens under every group of settings under the sun, and is enough of a tease to work just once. I am willing to do whatever it takes to work through this if somebody can just give me a jumping-off point.

UPDATE: The following configuration is for experts. If you're already using simple file sharing (and if you don't know, you probably are) then try enabling the Guest account and rebooting before attempting a more advanced method like this.

I feel your pain. Not with this specific problem, but I've felt the same frustration with other things. Computers suck.

I did have a little bit of trouble connecting myself, and I don't have a whole lot to add to your very thorough troubleshooting, but maybe it will help eliminate a few variables...

(I'm running XP so there will be some differences / inapplicabilities.)

    - My games are in D:\PS2 underneath CD and DVD subdirectories
    - Share name is PS2, the folder being shared is D:\PS2
    - Simple file sharing is off
    - Share permissions are "Everyone - full control"
    - Local permissions also include "Everyone - full control"
    - Firewall on, exceptions for File/Print sharing enabled (the defaults - I never needed to tinker with these.)
    - I have a router in the mix, but no port forwarding or other special settings that I can recall.

I wasn't able to connect anonymously / as a guest. I always connect with the name of user who has a password. Windows is pretty picky about not allowing remote logins w/o a password.

UPDATE: If you've disabled simple file sharing but still want to be able to connect without a password (required for OPL 0.7) then enable the Guest account and remove it from the "Deny access to this computer from the network" security policy setting.

When tinkering with the settings, I remember always quitting and restarting OPL.

Successful pinging sounds like the root cause is somewhere in the sharing interface, which was what my problems ended up being.

That's all I got. Maybe it can help in some small way.

    Good luck!

Tell us your constellation (PS2 -> LAPTOP, or PS2 -> HUB -> LAPTOP....).

    OH YES

    THANK YOU

All I did was these steps and it's working flawlessly now. I guess it was the "Simple" filesharing that was the problem. You are a god among men, and have made the general quality of life MUCH better. **** paying for dvd's.

also, thanks to the other poster for trying to help, and to ease your curiousity, I have it as "Ps2 linked to router, which my computer is also plugged into."

As an aside, I have been burned by "nvm, fixed it " during troubleshooting, so here's one for the inevitable next guy googling this shit:

OPL 0.9 network startup error 300 Fixed by the above poster's troubleshooting steps, and if you are using Win7, MAKE SURE SIMPLE FILESHARING IS OFF!!!!

PS: THANKS THANKS THANKS THANKS THANKS AGAIN
PPS: the flame emote is from metal slug 3. hell yes.

    Glad I could help.

These types of beating-your-head-against-the-wall difficulties tend to be either really obscure problems or simple, easily-overlooked things. So I figured there was some chance it was the simple case and my information could help.

Although I'm kinda surprised it did, to be honest...

That's really a nice tip. I myself never had problems related to, but recently a friend of mine faced the same issue with OPL 0.9 and he confirmed that the problem was solved after applying this trick.

    Thanks!

Strangely enough with WinXP, you can get away with simple file sharing being enabled ...

So I'm getting the error 300 as well now and can't figure it out. I've tried everything listed here on both of my ps2s and nothing, the thing that strikes me as odd is that both my xbmc xbox1s can access the share just fine. Using XP PRO SP3 if it matters too much. Any suggestions welcome as SMB is my main method of playing games. Before anything asks, litterally the only thing that changed since I last used SMB was adding another game to my DVD folder.

I think I'm basically saying the same thing here, but my best guess is that some incompatible permissions got in there somehow and are interfering. I'd go over the permissions of both the share itself and the files/directories with a fine-tooth comb.

If that doesn't help, you could also try creating a different share (strictly for troubleshooting purposes) in a new directory. Ideally, this would be on a FAT32 volume (maybe a USB stick with a single CD game or something) since FAT32 has much simpler permission schemes. That is kind of overkill though.
